Trump Threatens To Send Military, Shut Border As Migrants Head For Mexico

Trump threatens to 'close border' over Central America caravan

Earlier in the week, the USA president had threatened to cut aid to Honduras and send U.S. troops to the Mexican border. The US sent more than $175m (£130m) to the country in 2016 and 2017, according to the US Agency for International Development.

Thousands of migrants rush across the border towards Mexico, in Tecun Uman, Guatemala. They quickly moved to overwhelm the law enforcement and military officers on both sides of the border by hurling rocks and other readily available objects.

When troops were previously mobilised by Trump in response to unlawful migration, their mission has been mostly passive support for border agents, like logistics and surveillance.

"It's a situation that is nearly impossible to resolve at this time for Mexico", Salazar told CNN en Español Thursday. López Obrador, the president-elect, will take over December 1.

The caravan then began streaming toward a bridge that would take them to Mexico.

Still, the idea that Mexico could close its porous southern border - or that the United States would choke off the lucrative trade and other traffic between the two nations - strained the imagination.

Why does it concern Trump?

The current migrant caravan is the second one this year with the first occurring around April.

Changes to detention rules saw thousands of migrant children detained and separated from their parents earlier this year, sparking national and worldwide condemnation.

Cannabis becomes legal in Canada
Currently, nine US states allow the recreational use of marijuana, including Arizona neighbors California, Nevada and Colorado. The Newfoundland stores are among at least 111 legal marijuana stores expected to open across the nation of 37 million people.

Where is the caravan now?

A Honduran migrant, part of a caravan trying to reach the USA, cries after others stormed a border checkpoint in Guatemala, in Ciudad Hidalgo, Mexico, Oct. 19, 2018.

The "caravan" of migrants in question, believed to be several thousand strong, has been snaking its way north from Honduras since last weekend.

"This caravan did not appear organically", a senior Trump administration official told journalists.

As the mass of humanity strung out from Guatemala City to the border, it was unclear whether those who made it the farthest would wait for their countrymen to arrive before attempting a mass crossing into Mexico.

Frustrated by Congress' failure to fully fund his proposed wall, Trump in April ordered National Guard personnel to help secure the border in four southwestern US states.

And according to global law, the USA can not deport asylum seekers without first determining the validity of their claim. "They came in droves from Guatemala and Honduras through the Mexican border and for years Uncle Sam rolled out the welcome mat offering housing, food, medical treatment and a free education".

The Mexico riot police pushed back and set off some smoke canisters. And U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is about to meet with officials in Mexico's capital. One group was as large as 275 people.

Around 4,000 people have fled ongoing violence in Honduras, where "gangs exercise widespread control in certain neighborhoods", The New York Times reports. Mexico, however, requires a passport at entry.
