Trump threatens to use military to close Mexican border, as migrant caravan approaches

In a series of tweets sent out early Thursday, President Donald Trump said he would use American troops close the border with Mexico to stop the flow of a caravan of migrants heading north.

Some 4,000 migrants fled their lives of poverty and violence in the Central American country with the hope of making it to the United States - despite repeated warnings from President Trump that he would deploy the usa military to stop them.

"I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!" the president threatened, if Mexico does not heed his request to stop what he termed an "onslaught" of people crossing the border into the U.S.

Recent U.S. efforts to curb immigration have come as record numbers of families have sought to enter the United States, although the overall number of people crossing the border is much lower than in previous years.

However, as USA Today notes, it is "not entirely clear" what Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez can do to turn the migrants back now that they are on Guatemalan soil. "Now if they would like the U.S. Army on the border of Central America and Mexico I am sure the government will help". That episode caused a spat between the United States and Mexico and was used to justify a deployment of National Guard troops to the border.

"How they're going to cross is what we're anxious about", he said.

The exhausted migrants - mostly from Honduras and Guatemala - slept under rainy skies on the streets and in a park in the border town of Tecún Umán, where the shelter for migrants and a local Catholic parish were filled to capacity.

Migrants with proper papers or who wish to apply for asylum will be allowed to enter Mexico, the ministries added.

But it also openly attacked the governments of the Central America's nations most of the migrants are coming from, including Honduras and Guatemala. Thousands of Honduran migrants are traveling through Guatemala, according to humanitarian aid groups.

Marcelo Ebrard, who is set to become foreign relations secretary when President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador takes office December 1, said Trump's tweets need to be understood in the context of the upcoming USA midterm elections.
