Turkey will continue searches at Saudi Consulate over journalist's death: Erdogan

The Saudi Arabia's consulate is cordoned off by Turkish police in Istanbul

An expected search Tuesday of the consul general's residence did not take place, according to a deputy police officer near the building who spoke to CNN's team in Istanbul.

They reportedly took with them samples, including of soil from the consulate garden.

The official said evidence was being shared with countries including Saudi Arabia and the United States.

King Salman ordered an investigation into the missing journalist on Monday.

"We went inside all the rooms, without any exceptions". They suspected Khashoggi of having ties to the kingdom's arch rival, Qatar, the source said.

Overnight, Turkish crime scene investigators entered the consulate for the first time since Khashoggi's disappearance and searched the premises for more than nine hours.

There was also disagreement over whether investigators would be allowed into the consulate-general's house.

Tuesday night, Pompeo released a statement saying, "I emphasized the importance of conducting a thorough, transparent, and timely investigation, and the Saudi leadership pledged to deliver precisely on that".

Turkish officials say they fear Khashoggi was killed and dismembered inside the consulate.

Trump had previously warned of "severe punishment" for the kingdom if it was found to be involved in Khashoggi's disappearance, which has spooked investors.

The meeting was attended by senior Saudi officials, including Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir, Interior Minister Prince Abdul Aziz bin Saud bin Nayef, Saudi Ambassador to the U.S. Prince Khalid bin Salman and U.S. Secretary of State for Political Affairs David Hale.

Mr Khashoggi appeared regularly on Arab talk shows and moved to Washington previous year.

Following his writing ban, Khashoggi left the kingdom, joining the Washington Post as a columnist and living between the U.S. capital and Istanbul.

Actor Gerard Butler said on Monday he canceled an upcoming trip to Saudi Arabia to promote a new film because it felt like an "incredibly insensitive" time to visit amid activist Jamal Khashoggi's disappearance.

Turkey's government has contacted US officials, suggesting that they have the required video and audio proof to validate that the missing Saudi Arabian writer and journalist Jamal Khashoggi was killed and dismembered by a Saudi government-backed gang in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

Pompeo will meet his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu to discuss bilateral and regional issues including Syria, the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement, without referring to the disappearance of Khashoggi. America's top diplomat later met with MBS, too.

Speaking to the Fox Business Network on Wednesday, Trump again cited counterterrorism cooperation with Saudi Arabia and the kingdom's contracts with US defense contractors.

Turkish authorities have an audio recording indicating that Khashoggi was killed in the consulate, a Turkish official and a security source told Reuters, and have shared evidence with countries including Saudi Arabia and the United States.

Suleyman Soylu, Turkey's interior minister, told the semiofficial Anadolu news agency that after the investigation is completed, the prosecutor's office and law enforcement will "meticulously present the results of the investigation", and "the whole world will be presented with what was what".

Surveillance footage leaked in Turkish media shows vehicles moving between the consulate and the consul's home after Khashoggi's disappearance. They entered the consulate late on Monday.

However, he refused to list what measures he would take, only saying that he would not choose to impose sanctions on the country for fear of losing its military sales orders with USA companies.

A Turkish official told CNN on Tuesday that Khashoggi's body was cut into pieces after he was killed two weeks ago at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
