USA service member killed in fighter crash in Ukraine

U.S. serviceman is killed in Ukraine during NATO drills that included California National Guard unit

It was not immediately clear if the other pilot aboard the Su-27 was killed or injured.

The Su-27UB fighter aircraft came down near the village of Ulaniv in Khmelnytsky district, Vinnytsia region, Ukraine, at around 5 p.m.

"We regret to report that according to the information of the search and rescue team, the bodies of two pilots have been found", said the statement.

On Tuesday night, the Air Force said a USA airman was involved in a fighter jet crash in Ukraine but did not say what his or her status was. Both the US and Ukrainian governments are investigating what caused Wednesday's crash.

The joint military training was billed as the "first-ever Clear Sky exercise", to be held primarily at Starokostiantyniv Air Base in Ukraine as well as other training areas and ranges in the region.
