Why did Google+ wait 7 months to disclose a bug?

Google exposed personal data of almost 500,000 and didn't disclose it

According to the Wall Street Journal's sources as well as documents reviewed by the publication, a software vulnerability gave outside developers access to private Google+ user data between 2015 and 2018. The decision to terminate its own social networking platform comes after a security flaw discovered (and patched) in March of this year left the data of approximately 500000 users exposed. An internal Google memo cited by the newspaper showed that executives were anxious about the damage the news would do to Google's reputation at a time when Facebook was already under fire for mishandling customer data in the Cambridge Analytica affair.

According to the blog post, the Google Plus data that was potentially exposed included names, email addresses, occupations, date of birth, profile photos and genders.

The company says it didn't find any evidence that any of the affected personal information was misused.

Launched in 2011 after the fall of Google Buzz (Google's 3rd attempt to create a social network), Google+ was the company's last attempt at competing with Facebook... and obviously, it didn't work.

The company also debuted a number of new privacy controls, including limiting the apps that can access Gmail, call log, and text messaging data. It said it had no evidence that the data was misused or that any developer was aware of it or had exploited the leak. This means that the bug had access to information shared to the user, even those not marked as public. Around 438 apps could have used this API, states Google. Google says it fixed the issue as soon as it was discovered, but the bad part of this all is that Google opted not to disclose the breach to users, instead sweeping the situation under the rug, hoping nobody would notice.

Kanye: 'Trump hat made me feel like Superman'
West replied: "It was from the soul". "There are people in jail for really long terms", Trump said in an interview with Fox News. A year later, West visited the then president-elect at Trump Tower in NY in December 2016.

The company is now responding to the incident and has detailed a set of data privacy measures, which includes shutting down Google+ for consumers.

Going forward, Google could face legal action for its failure to report the security breach to the public.

Google is now shutting down Google+, but not because of the lack of users and activity.

At the same time, we have many enterprise customers who are finding great value in using Google+ within their companies.

Google said, "the consumer version of Google+ now has low usage and engagement: 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds".
