Yale classmate recalls Kavanaugh as frequent, heavy drinker

Michael Avenatti says the Kavanaugh FBI investigation is a 'farce and is being run by Donald Trump'

US President Donald Trump hit back Sunday at suggestions his administration is trying to "micromanage" the FBI investigation of controversial Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, accusing opposition Democrats of being interested only in obstruction.

A senior Senate GOP source told Fox News they were told the FBI probe could be wrapped by Tuesday, though President Trump has given the bureau until Friday to complete its supplemental background check.

But Trump continued his staunch defense of his Supreme Court pick Monday, calling for a "comprehensive" but "quick" FBI investigation into the allegations of sexual misconduct as the agency works to meet a looming deadline.

When pressed again about the details of the scope of the investigation, Trump said he thinks the FBI "should do what they have to do to get the answers".

He revisited the "scope" question later Saturday on Twitter, writing in part, "I want them to interview whoever they deem appropriate, at their discretion".

President Trump ordered the FBI to investigate the sexual malfeasance claims against Kavanaugh after Senator Jeff Flake caved to the Democrat's demands because two leftist activist women shrieked at him in an elevator. It does not lie in the mouths of those who have not faced such pressures to be cynical about Ford's references to threats she has received and Judge Kavanaugh referring to his reputation and the lives of his family having been "destroyed". He added he did not want the probe to become a "witch hunt" and that it should be completed quickly. He has also denied an accusation from Deborah Ramirez, a classmate at Yale, who said he exposed himself to her at a dorm party more than 25 years ago.

As Republicans and Democrats quarreled over whether the FBI would have enough time and freedom to conduct a thorough investigation before a vote on the nomination, FBI agents have been interviewing multiple witnesses from Kavanaugh's high school and college years. "I have a very open mind", he elaborated at a Monday news conference.

The FBI inquiry has delayed a final vote on Judge Kavanaugh, who if confirmed is likely to make America's highest court more conservative. She testified at a hearing last week that Judge Kavanaugh tried to remove her clothing, pinned her to a bed and covered her mouth at a house party in 1982, when she was 15 and he was 17.

Kavanaugh's temperament to serve on the court has also come under question. For the good of the court and the nation, he should be pressing, as should Mr. McGahn and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) for the "comprehensive" investigation that Mr. Trump has promised.

"Can you imagine if I had, what a mess I'd be?" he joked.

When it was explained to Flake that that's not actually what happened in the movie, Flake responded, "Oh". "For the reasons discussed below, I do not think that a reasonable prosecutor would bring this case based on the evidence before the Committee".

Moments earlier, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell accused Democrats of engaging in the "politics of personal destruction" against a "stunningly qualified nominee". Kavanaugh denies that as well.

Mr Kavanaugh denies the allegations against him.

Coons and Flake met in a tiny hallway outside the Senate meeting, and as other members of the committee got involved in the discussions, the two squeezed into "literally a phone booth that we can barely fit in" to continue discussions with another senator, Coons said.

Democrats on Monday expressed concern over Kavanaugh's statements about his activities and his alcohol consumption in school.

"I watched him and I was surprised at how vocal he was about the fact that he likes beer".

"Assuming the FBI's probe is truly going to dive into that issue in depth - and even with the revised guidance it remains unclear if that is the case - then yes, the perjury angle is potentially far more troubling than anything else", said Bradley Moss, a national security attorney who handles background investigations of federal employees and appointees.

But at the same point in time, the White House has put out statements from two college friends who say Kavanaugh did not behave that way.
