Apple Acquires AI Startup Silk Labs ‘almost secretively’

Apple Buys Silk Labs

Apple quietly bought artificial intelligence startup Silk Labs, according to a report.

Apple Acquires AI Startup Silk Labs for undisclosed amount.

Silk Labs had about a dozen employees and raised approximately $4 million in funding, said the report.

The company was founded back in 2015 by three former Mozilla employees - Andreas Gal, Chris Jones and Michael Vines - who worked on the company's now-defunct on Firefox OS, its attempted competitor to iOS and Android. Silk adds on their website that they bring next-generation visual and audio intelligence to connected products.

Both Apple and Silk Labs have talked about using AI in ways that protect user privacy. "Our own information, from the everyday to the deeply personal, is being weaponized against us with military efficiency", Cook stated in an impassioned speech at the 40th International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners in Brussels in October.

Four killed, including gunman and police officer, in shooting at Chicago hospital
Dayna Less, a pharmacist, had recently graduated from Purdue University and was in her first year of residency at Mercy Hospital. The worst was in Chicago , where a gunman killed a doctor, a police officer and a bystander at the city's oldest hospital.

Silk Labs had also created an intelligent camera which also served as a hub for controlling other smart gadgets present in the home.

With the acquisition of Lattice Data-a machine learning and AI firm-in 2017 for $200 million and now this, Apple seems to be focussing more towards employing artificial intelligence technology in its devices. Basically, Silk developed on-device AI software to detect people, faces, objects, and audio - rather than relying on cloud servers to handle all the processing.

The startup, Silk Labs, still maintains its website and there has been no official announcement of the acquisition. Somewhat surprisingly, the San Mateo, California-based machine learning outfit decided against building a very interesting device called Sense after a successful crowdfunding campaign.

"Privacy and security are built into our company's DNA".

Additionally, it also anonymizes data on its Silk Intelligence platform.
