Cross Counter wins the 2018 Melbourne Cup

Magic Circle is among the favorites for the 2018 Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 6

Melbourne Cup contender Cliffsofmoher has been euthanised on track after suffering a fractured shoulder.

Sheikh Mohammed at Tattersalls in 2014.

Cross Counter was the final victor of the Melbourne Cup after a nail-biting final, taking the lead in the very last seconds of the home stretch.

He is the sixth horse to die in the Melbourne Cup since 2013 according to the RSPCA.

Their respect was such that Australian-born McEvoy, the 2004 St Leger-winning rider on Rule Of Law, was the obvious choice to partner the late maturing Cross Counter to a historic win as William Buick, Appleby's No 1 rider, could not make the light weight.

One of the most influential racing operations in the world, the Sheikh Mohammed-backed Godolphin stable has been trying to win the Melbourne Cup since 1998. I can't believe it - I'm over the moon.

Cross Counter's victory added another feather to Appleby's cap with the trainer having sent out Masar to win the Derby at Epsom back in June in the blue silks of Godolphin.

"I wasn't sure at first we were going to run down the third horse (A Prince Of Arran) and then when we went past him I just saw the red cap (of Cross Counter) coming", he said.

Caulfield Cup victor Best Solution is also a wet weather specialist, with three wins from four starts and is $13.

New Orleans Saints getting Dez Bryant is flat out unfair
Bryant retweeted a person congratulating him on landing with the Saints , who lost receiver Ted Ginn Jr . for the year. Bryant visited New Orleans on Monday, working out with fellow wideouts Brandon Marshall and Kamar Aiken.

"This is all for Sheikh Mohammed and the royal family and
Godolphin, and for me to say thank you for giving me this opportunity", he said. "It's been a very memorable day".

One of sport's greatest hoodoos is no more and the billion-dollar Sheikh, whose earliest memory was galloping through the desert on a white stallion with his father, can finally say he is a Melbourne Cup victor.

It tarnished a thrilling win by Cross Counter, who saluted ahead of Marmelo and A Prince Of Arran.

So important is the race that it is a public holiday in the state where it is held - Victoria - although it has not enjoyed its usual central focus during the annual spring carnival this year.

The victory by Cross Counter notched up 30 Group One wins for Godolphin worldwide this year.

"There is no one who has put more horses into this race and this is his wonderful first win", Elliott told the New Zealand Herald. We send him our best.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy celebrated his third win in the grueling two-mile race, drawing level with active jockeys Damien Oliver and Glen Boss. Obviously Godolphin has been a huge supporter of mine.

"The time difference has meant a lot of punters' activity has come through later in the morning and has been skewed towards the outsiders", the agency's Ella Zampatti said. Well done to Charlie and this little horse.
