Democrats cry foul as Republican claims victory in Georgia count

Judge rules on requests by Abrams campaign

It's over in Georgia: Stacey Abrams called a press conference Friday to acknowledge that Republican Brian Kemp will be the state's next governor, reports Politico.

"Without a preliminary injunction, the voters whose ballots have been rejected on improper grounds or without a chance to cure the rejection will lose their opportunity to vote in this election; an injury that money can not compensate", U.S. District Judge Steve Jones said in issuing the emergency ruling. "But to watch an elected official - who claims to represent the people in this state, baldly pin his hopes for election on the suppression of the people's democratic right to vote - has been truly appalling", Abrams said. This is not a speech of concession, because concession means to acknowledge an action is right, true, or proper. "I can not concede that". "The law now allows no further viable remedy", she said.

Ms Abrams ran as the first black female nominee for governor in the US.

Unofficial returns showed Kemp ahead by roughly 60,000 votes out of almost 4 million cast on November 6. Georgia law requires a runoff if no candidate gets a majority of the vote, which is only a possibility because a third-party contender netted about 1 percent...

The long-shot strategy, first reported by the Associated Press, comes as Georgia elections officials appear to be poised to certify Kemp as the victor in the hard-fought contest as early as Friday. "The campaign is over, and Kemp's focus is on building a safer, stronger future for Georgia families", Kemp campaign spokesman Ryan Mahoney said.

"Together, we will realize the opportunities and tackle the challenges to come", the statement said.

Jimmy Kimmel Begs Michelle Obama to ‘Save Us’ from Trump
It was not all gloom as she went on to reveal that she enjoyed the company of Obama's relatives who turned out to be her in-laws. Obviously, the Kimmel team couldn't go too insane for numerous reasons but the end result is still a giggle.

When he appeared at the state Capitol last week, he asserted that he had won "a clear and convincing victory" and pledged to "put hardworking Georgians ahead of politics".

And the defeat was a setback for Georgia Democrats, who saw Abrams, their former leader in the state House of Representatives, as their most formidable candidate for statewide office in years.

But in a fiery speech, Abrams insisted this was no normal concession, decrying the voter suppression - at the hands of Kemp, the former secretary of state - she believed had led to this conclusion.

Kemp, a hardline conservative closely aligned with Donald Trump, had remained Georgia's secretary of state overseeing elections throughout the campaign prompting suggests of a conflict of interest.

Abrams made no such retreat from her criticisms of Kemp, saying she refused "to say nice things and accept my fate". Abrams is assembling a team of three dozen attorneys who may file a petition asserting that there are very likely far more than 18,000 Georgians who were not permitted to vote or whose ballots were improperly rejected. His detractors said he spent years making it harder for minorities and poor people to register and vote; he countered by arguing that his policies protected the integrity of the rolls and the elections.

But Republicans continue to drum the message that the continued counting of mail-in and provisional ballots, now 10 days after Election Day, in places like Georgia, Florida and Arizona is part of a Democratic attempt to steal elections, even though the recounts are legally mandated under each state's election laws.
