Democrats demand Matthew Whitaker recuse himself from Mueller probe

In U.S. midterm elections on Tuesday Democrats took control of the House of Representatives while Republicans held the Senate

Protests around the country, including Orlando, were organized Thursday in response to President Donald Trump's decision to name Matt Whitaker as acting attorney general.

President Donald Trump distanced himself Friday from his new acting attorney general, Matthew Whitaker, whose past business ties and comments on the Russian Federation investigation and other topics have drawn scrutiny.

Whitaker also argued on CNN past year that the investigation should be curtailed, describing a scenario in which an acting attorney general reduced Mueller's budget "so low that his investigations grind to nearly a halt".

"The mood was cautiously hopeful", Bryan said.

The president told reporters Friday that Whitaker is "a highly respected man, especially by law enforcement, and I think he's going to do a great job". If you're in NY, you can't investigate things in Idaho. Those TV appearances included one on CNN in which Whitaker suggested that the Mueller probe could be starved of resources.

"Republicans captured at least four Senate seats held by Democrat incumbents and these are tremendously talented hardworking people that did this: Indiana, North Dakota, Florida, Missouri". Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Whitaker was "appointed legally" and there was no reason for him to recuse himself from the Mueller investigation. Another Republican senator, Susan Collins of ME, said she was concerned by some of Whitaker's past comments and called for legislation that would place limits on his ability to fire special counsel Mueller.

Whitaker's connection to World Patent Marketing came as a surprise to both senior Justice Department and White House officials, several officials said.

In defense of Whitaker, Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway told Fox News Sunday Whitaker made such comments as a "private citizen" and argued that the Mueller investigation, which has produced guilty pleas or verdicts from four former Trump aides, had generated more than a million pieces of paper and gone on too long.

Jones crew chief Chris Gayle was fined $50,000 and vehicle chief Jason Overstreet was suspended the next two races. Crew chief Jeremy Bullins is fined $50,000, and auto chief Kirk Almquist is suspended for the next two races.

His new role as acting attorney general gives him the power to reject requests by Mr Mueller, the special counsel, as well as end parts of his investigation, fire him and even keep secret his final report.

Whitaker, on the other hand, has no intention of recusing himself, according to people close to him. "I mean, I know Matt Whitaker". "Regrettably, Mr. Whitaker's statements indicate a clear bias against the investigation that would cause a reasonable person to question his impartiality", read the letter, which was signed by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and other top Democrats.

Trump has not said who he will nominate to permanently replace Sessions.

"We're far from that right now", he said.

"If Mueller wants to do any more subpoenas, if he wants to bring in Don talk about the meeting at Trump Tower, he has to go through Whitaker to make that happen", said Scot Northern, who attended the protest in Iowa City.

He said: "I would only align myself with a first-class organisation".

"I think everybody looking at a permanent position in any department has done many shows".

Activists are demanding Whitaker recuse himself and that Congress investigate obstruction of justice allegations against the president when it reconvenes in January.
