Facebook blocks 115 accounts suspected of 'inauthentic behavior'

Facebook removes more pages, as FBI warns Russia still targeting American voters

Facebook made the announcement in a statement Monday evening, saying it blocked 30 accounts on its namesake platform and 85 on Instagram that authorities believe are linked to foreign entities tying to interfere with the closely watched USA elections.

Facebook said it blocked 115 Facebook and Instagram accounts believed to be engaging in manipulation ahead of today's midterm elections after receiving a tip from federal law enforcement officials who suspected the activity was linked to foreign entities.

Most the Facebook pages were in Russian or French, while the Instagram accounts were largely in English.

Gleicher wrote that the accounts were immediately blocked after the company was notified Sunday evening of suspicious behavior and that the questionable accounts - potentially linked to foreign entities - are being investigated "in more detail".

At this early stage, Facebook says it doesn't know which foreign actors were attempting to spread mischief on its platform, or whether any of these accounts are linked to the Russia-based Internet Research Agency.

15 killed in China highway accident
It was Li's first time driving the stretch of road, the China Daily said. 34 others have been injured and are being treated at hospital .

She said Russian "trolls", or provocateurs, were likely stoking sentiments on both ends of the USA political spectrum "but that the network we now have identified is targeting the far right of American political discourse".

Despite an aggressive crackdown by social media firms, so-called "junk news" is spreading at a greater rate than in 2016 on social media ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, Oxford Internet Institute researchers said in a study published Thursday.

They were widely criticized following the 2016 presidential election for allowing themselves to be exploited by foreign influence campaigns.

Twitter said Saturday it deleted a "series of accounts" that attempted to share disinformation. Last month, Facebook removed more than 800 pages and accounts that were spreading misinformation seeking to influence public opinion on both the right and left sides of the aisle.

Facebook, which has been blamed for doing too little to prevent misinformation efforts by Russian Federation and others in the 2016 U.S. election, now wants the world to know it is taking aggressive steps with initiatives like the war room.
