Facebook denies hiding Russian sabotage after shocking New York Times investigation

"As with numerous biggest challenges we face, there isn't broad agreement on the right approach, and thoughtful people come to very different conclusions on what are acceptable tradeoffs", Zuckerberg wrote.

"We are getting better at proactively identifying violating content before anyone reports it, specifically for hate speech and violence and graphic content", Facebook said in the new transparency report.

George Soros speaks during a forum at the IMF/World Bank annual meetings in Washington on September 24, 2011.

"I learned about this relationship when I read this New York Times piece yesterday", Zuckerberg declared. The story, based on interviews with more than 50 people, makes the case that Zuckerberg and Sandberg "ignored warning signs" that Russians were exploiting the platform, "then sought to hide them from public view".

The thin details suggested to some analysts that the concept for the oversight board was part of Facebook's efforts to deflect attention from its continuing problems, which were the subject of a lengthy New York Times story on Wednesday.

Sandberg also wielded her high-ranking position at Facebook to personally appeal to lawmakers in Washington and state attorneys general, the report said, in the hope of curtailing regulations and investigations targeting the social network.

When criticism of its belated Russian Federation admission grew, Facebook mounted a lobbying campaign led by Sandberg.

Rooney ready to enjoy England farewell after pressure of 'Golden Generation'
My family are settled there, my children go to school there now and it wouldn't be fair to move them back and forth". He added: "It is something I am looking forward to".

Zuckerberg is said to have justified the decision by saying more Facebook customers use Android than Apple.

Facebook on Thursday denied allegations in the New York Times that it tried to mislead the public about its knowledge of Russian misinformation ahead of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, but severed links with a Republican consultancy.

On Russia, Zuckerberg declared in the fall of 2016 that it was "crazy" to think Facebook had been used to help Donald Trump win the U.S. presidency, but the report said in-house experts knew this not to be the case.

"I've said many times that we were too slow to spot Russian interference ... and we certainly stumbled along the way. The document referenced in the Times story regarding the anti-Facebook organization's potential funding sources was entirely factual and based on public records, including public statements by one of its organizers about receiving funding from Mr. Soros' foundation", the Definers spokesperson said.

"Facebook should launch an independent investigation of what took place and to publish a full report disclosing the techniques that were used in their effort to compromise activists and George Soros".

In a letter addressed to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg, the president of Soros' Open Society Foundations denounced Facebook's alleged actions and asked to speak with Sandberg in person. Per the NYT, that came in response to comments Cook make slamming Facebook in an MSNBC interview earlier this year in the wake of revelations that Cambridge Analytica improperly obtained info on millions of Facebook users.

At the same time, Facebook and other tech giants are facing criticism from Trump and others that they suppress conservative voices.
