Facebook is taking action in the wake of the Russia investigation

A map from website status tracker downdetector.com showed problems concentrated on the East Coast and in Europe.

As of 3pm some Facebook users are still reporting the social network is experiencing issues.

Facebook didn't immediately have an explanation about what was causing Tuesday's outage.

Thousands of users across the world have reported the outage.

Facebook Messenger has crashed, with users around the world complaining they are unable to login or send messages.

Facebook confirmed the issues on its Twitter account, saying the company was "working to resolve the issue as soon as possible".

Facebook was yet to reveal the reason behind the outage.

Social media users have taken to Twitter to comment on the fact that Facebook appears to be out of service.

Facebook released a statement Tuesday saying, "We are now experiencing issues that may cause some API requests to take longer or fail unexpectedly".

Users have also posted images of the web versions of both the Facebook main page and Facebook Messenger not working.
