Japanese TV show axes BTS performance over atomic bomb T-shirt

TV Asahi cancels performance of K-pop group BTS over A-bomb shirt

Recently, a controversy arose over photos of BTS member Jimin wearing a t-shirt commemorating the day that Korea was liberated from Japanese colonial rule in 1945. "We deeply apologize to the viewers who were looking forward to their appearance".

TV Asahi, one of Japan's biggest private broadcasters, has dropped the group from a popular music programme this evening over the T-shirt worn by Park Ji-min, known as Jimin.

The Tokyo-based TV Asahi said it has chose to call off their performance Friday night on its Music Station program after asking the band's agency about the member's intention in wearing the shirt.

A picture of Jimin wearing a T-shirt depicting the U.S. atomic bombing of Japan, which killed hundreds of thousands of people, starting being shared online.

"We have chose to cancel BTS' November 9 appearance, which was previously previewed on November 2".

BTS apologised for the cancellation but made no reference to the T-shirt. "It was simply added to show the truth and the process of how the liberation of Korea came about when Japan surrendered after the atomic bombs", Lee said as cited by Allkpop. "BTS will continue their efforts to connect with fans on stage and also through music", the group said.

It is unclear when exactly Jimin wore the shirt in question, but pictures of him in it started circulating online in October.

BTS member Jimin reportedly wore the shirt past year, on Aug 15, when Koreans celebrate the end of Japanese occupation in 1945.

World War II remains a tense subject between South Korea and Japan.

"I'm from Hiroshima. I can't accept BTS appearing on Music Station", said Twitter user ayum_mi.

Japan became the first nation to suffer an atomic bombing on 9 August 1945, at Hiroshima.

Last month, Tokyo reacted furiously after South Korea's top court ordered a Japanese steel giant to compensate victims of wartime forced labor programs.
