Kudlow plays up prospect ‘deal can be made’ between Trump and Xi

Trump may slap tariffs on iPhones Report

The US stockmarket shivered and fell when the Trump interview was published but recovered some ground on Tuesday after National Economic Council director, Larry Kudlow, while expressing some scepticism that the meeting would produce an agreement, said Trump remained open to a breakthrough and believed a deal could be made.

"As you can imagine this is a big deal, this meeting - the stakes are very high", Kudlow said.

"If we don't make a deal, then I'm going to put the $267 billion additional on", at a tariff rate of either 10 percent or 25 percent, Trump told the Journal. Trump has faced calls to take a harder line on Saudi Arabia, and the prince in particular, after a Saudi journalist and USA resident Jamal Khashoggi was killed by Saudi nationals at a consulate in Turkey in October.

In a statement Wednesday, U.S. Trade Rep. Robert Lighthizer complained that China slaps 40 percent tariffs on U.S. auto imports - more than the 15 percent tariffs it imposes on other countries and the 27.5 percent U.S. tax on Chinese auto imports.

Despite Kudlow's repeated insistence that Trump sees cause for optimism, he also underlined the tough conditions that the administration wants to impose on Beijing.

Washington and Beijing remain at odds on key issues such as US accusations of intellectual property theft and forced technology transfer, he said.

Trump is also inked in to meet separately with Russia's Vladimir Putin and the leaders of Argentina, Germany, India, Japan, South Korea and Turkey, White House officials said.

Mississippi Republican wins final 2018 Senate race
While Hyde-Smith largely stayed off the campaign trail, the party's infrastructure rallied to her defense. He said the race was an uphill climb that required Democratic turnout to overpower GOP enthusiasm.

U.S. -Russia relations are under huge strain, while Trump is under investigation at home for alleged collusion with Moscow during his 2016 presidential election win.

Complicating the already complex diplomatic landscape, Russian Federation shot at Ukrainian ships and captured three vessels on Sunday, prompting the government in Ukraine to accuse Moscow of preparing for "full-scale war".

If it does occur, expert observers remain wary that the Trump-Putin meeting could result in a repeat of a maligned Helsinki summit in July that saw Trump forsake the U.S. intelligence community's conclusions of Russian interference in the 2016 United States election in favor of amplifying Putin's denials.

The dinner with Xi is scheduled as one of the last events on Trump's itinerary there before he returns to Washington, Kudlow said.

But at that same dinner he has warned Mr Trump will hike tariffs on United States exports should he not get the deal he wants.

Trump told The Washington Post on Tuesday that "maybe I won´t have the meeting".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said, however, that any interaction between the two leaders could not be ruled out.
