Pink Wave: Women to Flood Congress After Historic Election Night

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wins election to New York’s 14th congressional district

■Voters in some states chose women to serve as governors for the first time.

Her victory in the US midterm elections on Monday makes her the youngest woman ever to win election to Congress. With some 80 percent of precincts reporting, Ocasio-Cortez has earned 79 percent of the vote, far outpacing the 13 percent going to her Republican rival.

Ayanna Pressley, congresswoman-elect for Massachusetts' 7th district.

The newcomer had edged out longtime Congressman Joe Crowley in a Democratic primary earlier this year.

Diversity also won the day Tuesday with a record number of women of color headed to the halls of Congress. Blackburn, a Republican member of Congress who aligned herself closely with Trump and his policies during this race, defeated popular former Democratic governor Phil Bredesen in a tight race by 10 points. Since the 2020 presidential election is about to begin in earnest (and midterm results led to more than one name be floated as possible candidates) let's take at least 24 hours to celebrate these women and their history-making wins.

Rashida Tlaib is one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress and will represent Michigan's 13th Congressional District.

She won for best featured actress in a musical in 2015 and had been due to play the same role in London's West End this summer. Her health issues had become such that this past January she went on medical leave from her job at ClearCaptions.

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of MI became the first Muslim women elected to Congress. Sharice Davids defeated a Republican incumbent in Kansas to become the first openly LGBTQ woman to represent Kansas. Davids is also Kansas' first openly gay statewide representative.

The age barrier was cracked on Tuesday as well, with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of NY, 29, earning her spot as the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.

Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib from MI became the first two Muslim women to win election to Congress.

These new records represent the culmination of a record-setting year for female candidates.

Beyond the Bay State, voters in other states picked Native American and immigrant women as their representatives.

In the days leading up to the election, Trump said his sharp focus on immigrant caravans moving north toward the U.S. -Mexico border, and the threats he contends they pose, would appeal to women. ME and South Dakota also elected their first female governors with Janet Mills and Kristi Noem, respectively. Jim McGreevey, a Democrat and former New Jersey governor, came out while in office in 2004. There are more women in office now than ever before, and this is only the beginning. White women with college degrees voted strongly for Democrats, by 22 points. Women's issues are the economy, their education, their gun control.
