Pundits Gripe Over Meaningless Senate Popular Vote - Hit & Run

Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings is expected to take over the House oversight committee

President Donald Trump took a buoyant view of midterm elections that saw his Republicans lose control of the House of Representatives.

She was flanked by No. 2 House Democrat Steny Hoyer and No. 3 House Democrat James Clyburn in a sign that the three could aim to lead the chamber in the new Congress that convenes in early January. But Trump is wrong that the Republicans outperformed historical precedents. Among those who see harassment as "not a serious problem", almost 8 in 10 voted Republican.

That it was, and the results in the House of Representatives are a dramatic and deserved rebuke for the president.

Despite the setback in the House, President Trump issued a self-congratulatory tweet Wednesday morning.

Indeed, Pelosi arguably did "earn" the speakership by continuing to campaign for Democrats even as many in her party called for new leadership.

Trump "may not like it, but he and his administration will be held accountable to our laws and to the American people".

What difference will the new Congress make?

Democrats lost Senate seats in deep-red Indiana, North Dakota and Missouri, fell far short in their attempts to win deep-red Tennessee, came up just short in heavily Republican but Democratic-trending Texas and flipped their only target in a state Trump lost, Nevada, to see the GOP grow its Senate majority to at least 52 seats and likely more like 54, pending results in Florida, Arizona, and Montana.

Using their control of House committees, they can demand to see Trump's long-hidden tax returns, probe possible conflicts of interest from his business empire, and dig into any evidence of collusion between Russian Federation and Trump's campaign team in the 2016 election.

While Democrats might want to restrict Mr Trump's domestic agenda, he may actually have more leeway in foreign policy areas, particularly on China.

It's a big deal that they now have governorships in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania - as evidenced by Democrats' netting three House seats in Pennsylvania alone Tuesday night after a court-drawn remap.

Did Sarah Sanders post a doctored InfoWars video to justify CNN ban?
This clip documents an incident which took place at a July 2015 event at the White House in honor of LGBT Pride Month. If the Press Secretary is grabbing her propaganda from InfoWars, the chances of her admitting it seem close to zero.

"If the Democrats think they are going to waste Taxpayer Money investigating us at the House level, then we will likewise be forced to consider investigating them for all of the leaks of Classified Information, and much else, at the Senate level", Trump wrote.

For the past two years, Republicans have subjected Trump to relatively little oversight, spurning most requests from the minority party.

Now he will have someone to blame if the economy takes a turn for the worse (and, given business cycle realities, it might).

Day in and day out, he'll have a set of clear political opponents to contrast himself with.

The next two years could be awkward for United States President Donald Trump.

Two years ago, in the internal party race for minority leader, 63 Democrats voted for Representative Tim Ryan of OH, but Pelosi received 134 votes. This probably strengthens the president's hand in the coming months.

History also indicates that while the road may be rocky, better days could be ahead.

These new records represent the culmination of a record-setting year for female candidates. Two years ago, Democrats lost the national House vote by 1 percent.

Among the winners were several first-time candidates, including two Native American women - one of them openly gay - and two Muslim women, a first in both categories.

Ayanna Pressley was elected as Massachusetts' first black congresswoman. Claire McCaskill in Missouri and Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine defeating Democrat Richard Cordray in the race for OH governor.

But there's nothing at all he can do about the House being run by Democrats - which changes everything.
