Sri Lankan prez Maithripala Sirisena dissolves parliament, snap polls on Jan 5

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena

The President of Sri Lanka dissolved parliament on Friday and called a snap election for January 5, in a move aimed at ending a political standoff that has disrupted its capital, Colombo, for weeks.

The notice said the names of candidates for new elections will be called before 26 November, and the election will be held on 5 January.

"We will go to the courts", Samaraweera said in Colombo.

Mark Field, the British minister of State for Asia and the Pacific, said: "As a friend of Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom calls on all parties to uphold the constitution and respect democratic institutions and processes".

Sirisena sparked the two week-old drama last month by sacking Ranil Wickremesinghe as prime minister and naming Mahinda Rajapaksa - the country's authoritarian president from 2005 until 2015 - as his replacement. He attempted to install Mahinda Rajapaksa as the new prime minister.

Sirisena signed an official notification dismissing the 225-member assembly with effect from midnight, clearing the way for a snap election almost two years ahead of schedule.

In the latest twist in the crisis, Sirisena's United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) said ahead of the president's stunning announcement they were at least eight legislators short of getting a majority for Rajapakse in the assembly.

Sirisena signed the decree dismissing Sri Lanka's 225-member parliament just hours after his party admitted the party did not have a sufficient number of votes to elect Rajapaksa.

China warns United States of 'DISASTER' amid 'HIGH CHANCE' of warship collision
China and the US are now locked in an ongoing trade war as each country has introduced tariffs on goods traded between each other. He signed the Taiwan Travel Act earlier this year, which encourages visits "at all levels" between US and Taiwanese officials.

96 MPs had supported the party before the crisis.

The party said in a Twitter message that it will meet the elections commissioner to discuss the constitutionality of Sirisena's move. "We will be fighting this to ensure that democracy reigns supreme in the country".

He accused sacked premier Wickremesinghe of causing instability by refusing to vacate his official residence, a charge rejected by him as well as several other parties who together command a majority in parliament.

It was not immediately clear how Sirisena can legally dissolve parliament, though his legal experts have said there are provisions for him to do so.

Sirisena's move is nevertheless set to be challenged by his opponents in the Supreme Court on Monday, with Tilvin Silva, the general secretary of the leftist People's Liberation Front (JVP), describing the action as "illegal".

Sirisena suspended parliament to give himself more time to engineer defections, according to the opposition.

The EU said Friday, before the dissolution, that the crisis had scarred the Indian Ocean island's worldwide reputation.

Sirisena was also critical of investigations into military personnel accused of human rights violations during Sri Lanka's long civil war against a Tamil separatist group, which ended in 2009. He can only plunge the country from one crisis to another and take the country down the path of Myanmar, or turning it into a banana republic where the law and the constitution do not matter. "For this inspiring effort, I want to thank everyone who has risen to fight for democracy and justice", Wickremesinghe said in a video posted on Facebook.
