UK's Brexit deal agreed by European Union leaders

WASHINGTON Nov. 26 2018 - U.S. President Donald Trump speaks to reporters before departing from the White House in Washington D.C. the United States on Nov. 26 2018. Donald Trump said here on Monday that he hopes the current confrontation

The PM told her Cabinet at a meeting on Monday morning that Sunday's endorsement of the Withdrawal Agreement and Future Framework was "a significant moment" which had proved wrong those who said it would not be possible to reach a deal.

"This discourages investment in the United Kingdom and ultimately means that United Kingdom workers are less productive than they would have been if the United Kingdom had stayed in the European Union".

"This is the best deal possible for Britain", he said.

Members of the British Parliament will vote on Brexit draft agreement with the European Union on December 11 as Prime Minister Theresa May navigates the deal despite the slimmest working majority.

DUP leader Arlene Foster, whose 10 MPs prop up Mrs May's minority Government in the Commons, said could not support the provisions on the Northern Ireland backstop meant to prevent the return of a hard border with the Republic.

More disconcerting for Mayt is a growing and more vocal chorus of resentment from her own Conservative Party, whose MP Mark Francois said her deal was "as dead as a Dodo".

"I am focusing on ensuring that I make a case for this deal to MPs", she said.

The current vote counts conducted by British media are not stacking up in May's favour.

Asked if the United Kingdom would be better off than if it stayed in, he said the country would not be "significantly worse or better off but it does mean we get our independence back".

May said her deal was in the national interest, but opposition Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said ploughing on with a deal that did not have the support of parliament was "an act of national self-harm". And this time she wouldn't be losing Esther McVey and Dominic Raab, she'd be losing her most senior ministers.

More recently, Hammond and business secretary Greg Clark tried to reassure dozens of leading chief executives on a conference call following the unveiling of May's Brexit deal earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Cabinet Brexiteers, including the leader of the House Andrea Leadsom are also poised to quit if May moves any further towards accepting a closer relationship with the European Union after Brexit.

Asked whether the deal would leave Britain better off than remaining in the European Union, he told the Andrew Marr programme that "We won't be significantly worse off or better off".

May will now embark on an intensive nationwide campaign to promote the deal with voters across the country and lawmakers in London.

After the vote, German chancellor Angela Merkel said it was a "historic day", but one that left her both sad and relieved.

"Our duty as a Parliament over these coming weeks is to examine this deal in detail, to debate it respectfully, to listen to our constituents and decide what is in our national interest".

Brexiteers want negotiators to return to Brussels to amend the deal, but European leaders have said that they have little room to improve it and that there is nothing more to talk about.

The Prime Minister can't count on the 10 DUP MPs with whom she has a confidence and supply deal.

"You know I hate [Brexit], but it is a given", he told reporters.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, right, greets British Prime Minister Theresa May at EU headquarters in Brussels, Nov. 24, 2018.

In an open letter to the nation written ahead of today's summit, May promised to bring the country together with her deal.

"There is very much a border down the Irish Sea as a result of this and that's way we can't support this deal", she told The Andrew Marr Show.
