USA abruptly postpones top-level North Korea talks

U.S. President Donald Trump says he expects to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un again sometime early next year and that his administration is "happy" with diplomatic efforts with Pyongyang.

There was much talk of the possibility of success following a meeting in June between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, but in the months since there has been little to quiet skeptics who believe the North will never give up weapons it has described as necessary to counter a hostile Washington.

It offered no reason and North Korea's propaganda services have not mentioned the meeting.

The State Department had earlier confirmed that Pompeo would meet Kim Yong Chol, a close aide of Kim, in NY to discuss progress toward a denuclearisation pact and to arrange a second summit following the historic talks between Trump and Kim in June.

North Korea warned last week that it will consider reviving its nuclear weapons program if the United States fails to lift its crippling economic sanctions against the regime.

"There have been cases in the past when US-North Korea talks were delayed, so there is no need to shift between hope and fear", a senior ministry official told reporters.

However, skepticism persists among conservatives in South Korea that Pyongyang could change its position if the two Koreas and the U.S. were to declare an end to the Korean War and subsequently enter negotiations for a peace treaty to replace the current armistice agreement.

Tuesday's elections made history, with an unprecedented number of minorities and women running for office. She spent four years in Dadaab until her family was cleared to emigrate to the US.

"This last-minute announcement of a delay is not a good signal as it indicates negotiations were not going well enough to go ahead with the planned meeting", he said.

The talks between President Donald Trump's top diplomat and the North Korean delegation, which had been due on Thursday, "will now take place at a later date", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said. -North Korea negotiations have completely broken down or "lost their momentum" because of the postponement.

Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea expert at Seoul's Dongguk University and a policy adviser to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, said a high-level meeting between the US and North Korea immediately after the USA midterm elections was never realistic, especially when the North was in no mood to make any concrete concessions.

At the news conference, Trump pointed out that North Korea has not tested further missiles amid the talks.

On Sunday, Pompeo said he was "not worried" about the North Korean demands and insisted there would be "no economic relief until we have achieved our ultimate objective".

"Russia has indeed asked for discussing the issue of North Korean sanctions during tomorrow's USNC consultations as part of the "Miscellaneous" section [of the agenda] ..." Pompeo said on October 8 that those inspectors would visit North Korea "as soon as we get it logistically worked out".
