USA sanctions against Iran takes effect, 8 countries get waivers

Khamenei Trump

"America wanted to cut to zero Iran's oil sales", but the Islamic Republic "will continue to sell" its oil "to break sanctions", Rouhani warned during a meeting with the economists, which was broadcast on TV.

President Donald Trump removed the USA from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal earlier this year, triggering the sanctions being imposed Monday.

Trump said the deal was weak and favoured Iran.

Rouhani said even without the waivers Iran would still be able to sell its oil, semi-official Tasnim news agency reported.

Israel had long opposed the Iran nuclear deal, saying it was too limited in scope and timeframe.

"But they're not doing very well", he said, referring to the economic setbacks the country has already faced because of an earlier round of US sanctions.

Pompeo also remarked on President Donald Trump's "sanctions are coming" message, which he tweeted out in the form of a dramatic Game of Thrones-style poster Friday. Iranian oil is a lucrative buy for refiners as the Persian Gulf nation provides 60 days of credit for purchases, terms not available from suppliers of substitute crudes - Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Nigeria, and the US.

Threatening more directly, Salami claimed that "battle with the Islamic Republic will take the war beyond the region" and "if we want, in a short time we can establish dominance over the U.S.in the Middle East".

He said he could not rule out that the US administration would extend the waivers beyond six months.

Nigerian Army posts Trump video to justify shooting Shiites
The Nigerian Army shared the video on its official Twitter handle on Friday morning and called on Nigerians to "make deductions". Trump said in a speech on Thursday that rocks thrown by migrants on the US-Mexico border should be considered as firearms.

Switzerland said it was holding talks with the United States and Iran about launching a humanitarian payment channel to help food and drugs keep flowing to Tehran.

The ministry's spokesman, Bahram Ghasemi, says that Iranians "have experienced more extensive sanctions" and that they are "not a new issue".

President Trump announced in May that his administration was withdrawing from what he called the "worst ever" agreement negotiated by the United States. "These sanctions hit at the core areas of Iran's economy, and they are necessary to spur changes we seek on the part of the regime". His comments come a day after Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Moscow would continue to buy Iranian oil, even after USA sanctions go back into place on Monday. Other parties to the deal, including Britain, France, Germany, China and Russian Federation, have said they will not leave.

Gen. Gholam Reza Jalali, the head of country's military unit in charge of combatting sabotage, said last week that President Hassan Rouhani's cellphone was tapped recently.

USA light crude was 15 cents lower at $62.99.

The rally in the capital of Tehran comes as the United States restored all sanctions that had been lifted on Iran during the era of the Iran nuclear deal.

"This loophole allowed millions of dollars to continue to flow to the regime", said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"India said to the USA that they can't stop before March, they are facing a major currency crisis", explained Joel Hancock, analyst at Natixis. The incident made Iran an global pariah and caused a diplomatic schism between the two countries that has remained to this day.
