Women share underwear pictures in #thisisnotconsent Cork rape trial acquittal protest

According to the Irish Examiner, O'Connell also asked the jury to consider how she was dressed and the possibility the 17-year-old was open to meeting someone and being with someone based on how she was dressed. The accused's barrister stated that "You have to look at the way she was dressed. She was wearing a thong with a lace front".

The accused in the case who denied raping the woman was acquitted by the jury of eight men and four women at the Central Criminal Court.

Other women in Ireland have joined in the protest by posting pictures of their own underwear on the internet, and several rallies are being held around the country.

Hundreds of Irish women protesters, reports The Irish Independent_, chanting "Whatever we wear and wherever go, yes means yes and no means no" as they walked through the streets of Dublin, Cork and Limerick, holding aloft signs reading "This is not consent" and "End victim blaming in courts".

The 17-year-old girl was wearing a thong on the night the alleged rape happened.

The hashtag was used by Irish women to post photographs of their underwear in all shapes and colours to protest against arguments such as the one put forward by O'Connell to be used in court.

Susan Dillon, who started the hashtag, which was kickstarted by the group I Believe Her, told BuzzFeed News that clothing is not a form of consent.

Bets for upcoming Southampton vs Arsenal fight

Rally organiser Emma Lennon of People Before Profit Galway said that she was prompted to act after reading about the Cork trial.

However, the reference to the complainant's underwear sparked concerns from both the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre and Sexual Violence Ireland.

She used Twitter to explain: "I hear cameras cut away from me when I displayed this underwear in Dail".

"Nobody asks to be raped and it's never the victim's fault".

"These kind of mythologies and stereotypes around rape come up again and again in court cases, because the defence to rape is that the sex was consensual".

"We made a decision to call this rally not just specifically about this case, but calling for an end to victim blaming in courts".

"We chose to call this rally not just specifically about this case, but calling for an end to victim-blaming in courts".
