World Wide Web inventor wants new ‘contract’ to make web safe

World Wide Web Inventor Wants New'Contract To Make Internet Safe

By committing to the following principles, governments, companies and citizens around the world can help protect the open web as a public good and a basic right for everyone.

The contract has been backed by the likes of Google, Facebook, Sir Richard Branson, Gordon Brown, Nesta, and The IO Foundation.

One serves as a reminder that the freedom we enjoy on the Internet today will always be in the crosshairs of those who seek power and profit.

Jonathan Zittrain, a law professor at Harvard University and author of The Future of the Internet and How to Stop It said: "To me, the most important function of the contract is to remind people that the web we have isn't the only one possible".

Respect people's fundamental right to privacy so everyone can use the internet freely, safely and without fear.

He wanted to rebuild trust in the web and increase internet access on fair and affordable terms.

You only have to look at the control that certain digital companies exert over the Web and the influence that data manipulation has had on democracies to understand why...

"Humanity connected by technology on the web is functioning in a dystopian way". The "Contract for the Web" is a set of principles seemingly created to make the internet a better place amid growing concerns emancipating from a wide array of issues from hate speech to political manipulation.

Networks declare Democrats will capture the House of Representatives
His campaign team created an advertisement focused on the caravan that was so racially charged that major TV networks pulled it. Election workers assist would-be voters at First Ward Creative Arts Academy on November 6, 2018, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The contract is light on details right now, but it will be fleshed out ahead of full publication in May next year-a milestone moment when half the world's population is expected to be online.

Be creators and collaborators on the web so the web has rich and relevant content for everyone.

Individuals would pledge to "respect civil discourse and human dignity so that everyone feels safe and welcome online", according to one of the core principles.

In addition, Berners-Lee has also recently established a small startup called Inrupt, which will promote uptake of an open-source project called Solid - both of which allow users to take control of their own data.

With the Internet of Things (IoT) being built upon easy, open access to the internet, the possibility of such traffic being throttled or blocked, and related businesses potentially being held to ransom for greater networking fees, introduces great uncertainty.

"If you sign up to the principles, you can't do censorship", said Berners-Lee. However, as the Web increases in power, this is having the unintended outcome of increasing the digital divide, Berners-Lee argued. The genie may seem to have come out of the bottle, but the internet has surprised us many times.

The news comes days after London-born computer scientist Berners-Lee - credited for helping to invent the web in 1989 - voiced his disappointment with the current state of the internet, following scandals describing abuse of personal data and the use of social media to spread hate.
