7.0 magnitude natural disaster rocks Alaska in US

Powerful quake rattles Alaska creates huge fissures on roads

The magnitude 7.0 natural disaster that rattled Alaska's largest city cracked roads and collapsed highway ramps, but there were no reports of widespread catastrophic damage or collapsed buildings.

Aftershocks Saturday continued to fray nerves.

Roads and bridges appeared to have been hardest hit, but Anchorage was otherwise largely spared from major structural damage, authorities said. "I kept waking up".

The Anchorage Daily News said the quake caused damage at the newspaper, cracking walls and mangling ceiling panels.

"Former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin wrote, "[Pray] for Alaska. The full extent of the damage isn't yet clear, but people have already posted photos and videos on social media of what they experienced. There's a good reason for that.

Alaska is shaken by hundreds of earthquakes each year, and many are hardly noticed.

Most of the smaller earthquakes since Friday's big one were not felt. The warning was in place for 90 minutes before it was cancelled. Slaton, who weighs 209 pounds, said it created a powerful back-and-forth sloshing that threw him out of the tub.

More than 230 aftershocks have hit parts of Alaska since on Friday when a massive 7.0-magnitude quake knocked out power, ripped open roads and damaged buildings near Anchorage, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

People ran from their offices and into the streets or took cover under desks as the ground shook for about 30 seconds.

Geophysicist Paul Caruso says 11 aftershocks have had magnitudes of 4.5 or greater. "I just keep thinking about how long our house was shaking and about how many aftershocks there were and how it just keeps coming and coming and coming", said Flannery. He also credited building codes for minimizing structure damage.

Roads didn't fare so well. However, the one highway leading north out of Anchorage received some major damage in spots.

The quake has also caused roads to break apart and other structures to collapse.

Aftershocks from Friday's powerful Alaskan quake continued to pound the area around Anchorage on Saturday, as workers strove to patch up buckled roads and residents began cleaning up damage around their homes and businesses. The trip is 350 miles (563 kilometres) each way.
