Citizen Rights Group Call on WI Legislature to "Respect Our Votes"

Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker delivers his budget address to a joint session of the legislature at the capitol

The Wisconsin legislature's lame duck session has been making national headlines.

The action comes as Democrats and their allies warned they would sue over numerous elements of the plan, especially over a measure that would limit early voting in Wisconsin to two weeks.

The legislation would weaken the governor's ability to put in place rules that enact laws and shield the state jobs agency from his control until September.

During the campaign, both Evers and Kaul took their Republican opponents to task over health care issues, in particular the state's participation in that legal challenge, which would end coverage protections for people with pre-existing medical conditions.

The measures also reset the 2020 primary election date and reduce the length of early voting - efforts seen as helpful to future Republican candidates.

Democrats have criticized it as a last-minute power grab that undercuts the November 6 elections, when Democrats broke years of total Republican control of state government in Wisconsin.

Both the state Assembly and the Senate approved the measures, which will protect the GOP's priorities while making it more hard for Evers to enact his.

That maneuver allows Republicans to scale back the laws with a simple majority, instead of the three-quarters vote required to change any voter-approved ballot measure.

They said 27 people have been named in the FIR while cases have been lodged against 50-60 unidentified people. He also said that police were scanning video footage to identify "anti-social elements".

One Wisconsin Executive Director Scot Ross said Monday the Republican measure shows the GOP "refuse to accept the results of the 2018 elections" after losing six statewide races, including the contest for governor. But rather than expanding early voting to all parts of the state, they chose to limit the early vote everywhere to two weeks, in an obvious move to prevent heavily Democratic areas from repeating the high turnout that just torpedoed Republican governor Scott Walker's bid for a third term.

Just after midnight, Republicans succeeded in approving, through party-line votes, a plan to lock in place a work requirement for Medicaid and food stamps, which would force tens of thousands of indigent yet able-bodied and childless adults under the age of 50 to work to qualify for these public benefits.

In North Carolina, Republican legislators attempted to curtail gubernatorial powers after Democrat Roy Cooper was elected in 2016. An amendment to do away with that provision was part of a Republican rewrite of the bill, made public around 4:30 a.m. CT after all-night negotiations. You didn't tell people you would do everything in your power to take away the power of a newly elected governor and attorney general. The plan is expected to easily sail through the Assembly as early as Wednesday morning, and Walker has said he will sign it. Michigan Republicans also are discussing taking action before a Democratic governor takes over there. And when a state law is challenged, it would give the state legislature the right to usurp the attorney general's authority, letting state lawmakers hire private attorneys at taxpayer expense to try the case their way. "Depends on what they send me", he said. He explained that lawsuits challenging the measures would bring more gridlock to Wisconsin.

The proposal would also restrict early voting to no more than two weeks before an election. Wisconsin Democrats in 2010 unsuccessfully tried to push through public union contracts after Walker won election while promising to get tough with organized labor.

Wisconsin's GOP Senate Majority Leader, Scott Fitzgerald, seemed ill-prepared for the wave of condemnation directed at his caucus, saying that he was "a little surprised" by the reaction and calling the demonstrations "over the top".

Under another bill the state legislature passed Wednesday, Kaul and Evers are forbidden from withdrawing the state's participation in any pending lawsuits filed by the state without legislative approval.

"They have even gone so far as to thumb their noses at the voters and a federal court order by re-imposing limits on early voting". The only step left is Scott Walker's signature, which-if he signs it-will seal his legacy as an enemy as democracy and a friend only to his own power.
