Google Hangouts to be shutdown in 2020

Google Hangouts

A report by 9to5Google suggests that Google plans to shut down the consumer version of Google Hangouts in 2020.

The news of Hangouts impending closure comes courtesy of 9to5Google which cites a source "familiar with the product's internal roadmap". The latest that will join the list of products Google has killed seems like Hangouts, a fairly popular messaging app.

Fast forward to April of this year, Google announced its new "Chat" features for Android Messages as its next big project for finally delivering a messaging service that can compete with Apple's iMessage.

Though it's still unofficial, and given Google hasn't managed to launch a successful cross-platform replacement for Hangouts it's time to start checking out the competition. But Hangouts is still the prominent chat option in Gmail on the web and the app remains on the Google Play Store to this day.

The company abandoned development of the consumer version of Hangouts more or less a year ago. Later it took parts of Hangouts and then turn them into Hangout Chat and Hangout Meet for business users, bundling the services with G Suite.

Moulton stands firm as Pelosi stockpiles speaker endorsements
Kurt Schrader continued his high-profile effort to keep Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi from regaining the House speakership. The group has been meeting with Pelosi and the incoming chairman of the House Rules Committee, Rep.

The shutting down was inevitable and delayed only because Allo performed poorly.

The news doesn't come as a surprise as Google had long ago stopped updating Google Hangouts.

Hangouts users have a year to find an alternative for the service; some may not want to give Google another chance.

Many have moved on from Hangouts after Google rebranded it to Hangouts Meet, but if youre still using Hangouts, you still have some time before Google eventually pulls the plug.
