Hawaiian monk seal has eel removed from its nose

Pray For Hawaii’s Monk Seals Who Keep Getting Eels Stuck Up Their Noses

Endangered Hawaiian monk seals are facing a odd new threat, on top of the usual challenges from disease and becoming caught in fishing nets. We have now found juvenile seals with eels stuck in their noses on multiple occasions. Honestly, despite not being a seal and not having an eel now lodged up my schnozz, I can truly empathise.

The Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program posted a startling pic of the poor pup on Monday, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries provided more details in a post on Wednesday. The episode was just the latest eel-in-snout incident to occur in the past two years, baffling researchers.

The administration said it has seen the same "eels in noses" phenomenon almost a handful of times in the last few years.

"We've been intensively monitoring monk seals for four decades and in all of that time nothing like this has happened", Charles Littnan, lead scientist at Noaa's Hawaiian monk seal research program, told the Guardian.

'In all cases the eel was successfully removed and the seals were fine.

CNN evacuated after bomb threat
MSNBC anchor Brian Williams interviewed WNYC investigative reporter Jonathan Dienst for the latest. Police said the building was evacuated and building security did a preliminary search.

However, the agency says it has managed to save up to 30 percent of the monk seals in the current population, cutting the rate of population decline by half. "We might never know".

Fortunately, no harm to the seals was observed. Now the beleaguered species is facing an unexpected new challenge - eels getting stuck up their noses. Also, seals' nostrils close automatically when the animals go under water, and having an eel in there could have hindered that process, closing off an all-around great day for the seal with some water up the nose. Another theory is that seals trying to regurgitate swallowed eels might accidentally send the slippery fish out the wrong hole.

According to the NOAA Fisheries, researchers recorded a record number of pups born to the endangered Hawaiian monk seals on the main Hawaiian islands in 2018.

The picture, which shows the seal looking surprisingly chill, has everyone amused.

'If you come across a Hawaiian monk seal mom and pup, please stay quiet and enjoy them from a distance, remaining behind any signs or barriers that might be present'.
