It’s increasingly looking like China was behind the massive Marriott data hack

Chinese spies reportedly behind massive Marriott hack

This finger pointing at China comes at a time when the U.S. has said it's facing increasing amours of attacks from the pseudo-socialist nation.

Marriott itself, which operates more than 5,800 properties in countries around the world, claims to be the leading hotel provider for the U.S. government and military, which China was no doubt aware of.

Officials from the Justice Department, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Homeland Security told the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday that China is working to steal trade secrets and intellectual property from USA companies in order to harm America's economy and further its own development. The stolen information could be used to discover "which Chinese citizens visited the same city, or hotel, as an American intelligence agent who was identified in data taken from the Office of Personnel Management or from American health insurers that document patients' medical histories and Social Security numbers".

The Marriott hacking allegation came amid heightened tensions between Beijing and Washington that encompass geopolitics, trade, technology rivalry and espionage. Chinese officials denied knowing anything about the hacking being done on behalf of any government agency, according to the Times.

Perhaps the most telling clue is where the data has not shown up. "The bottom line is they will do anything they can to achieve their aims", he said.

President Donald Trump said he would get involved in the Huawei case if it would help produce a trade agreement with China, but Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland on Wednesday warned the United States not to politicise extradition cases.

"It's about intelligence, human intelligence", he said. Pompeo spoke broadly about Chinese intelligence operations, and said "That's right" when the host suggested the Marriott hack was the latest example.

The Starwood hack was publicly revealed last month, not long before the USA began a 90-day trade truce negotiated by both China and the Trump administration at the G20 summit in Buenos Aires. Such investigations can be time-consuming and hard.

Assistant Attorney General John Demers says, "We can not tolerate a nation that steals the fruit of our brainpower".
