McLaren unveils unique P1 GTR to honour Senna’s ’88 championship

McLaren reveals Senna-inspired P1 GTR

The final result is on display here: a McLaren P1 GTR outfitted in Rocket Red and Anniversary White to recall the Marlboro livery Senna famously raced. Complementing the revamped 3.8 litre twin-turbocharged V8 are modified engine bay shrouds, a Lexan rear engine cover and a 24-karat gold heatshield reminiscent of the F1 road auto.

McLaren says the new auto - christened Beco, which was Aryton's nickname given to him by his parents - also has power increase over the standard vehicle, along with a McLaren F1-style 24-carat gold heat shield and modified engine shrouds.

McLaren loves Ayrton Senna and they have been able to relate with the legendary driver in plenty of ways through their cars. The doors also sport the Brazilian flag and a bar code used in place of "Marlboro" as deemed necessary by advertising restrictions.

At their request, McLaren Special Operations (MSO) recreated the colour scheme from Senna's most famous race auto on the customer's 2019 P1 GTR, and we have to admit it looks stunning. The paintwork alone took some 800 hours to complete, with the whole project taking some three years.

McLaren launches Senna edition P1 car

The MP4/4 was the most successful McLaren race auto, taking home 15 of the 16 races it entered, driven by Senna and Alan Prost.

Exterior details include the Senna brand trademark on the front splitter and air intakes, which reads "Driven to Perfection".

But changes made to this P1 GTR-named "Beco" after Senna's little-known nickname-aren't skin-deep. It's not just the distinctive paint scheme that includes a nod to Senna, as Brazilian flags don the doors, along with distinctive Senna badging throughout the vehicle. Senna's signature and his famous "designed to win" quote adorn the carbonfibre tub itself. On the outside the auto gets a new aero package which increases downforce to an extraordinary 800kg. There's also an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching and Senna branding, as well as a matching crash helmet for the GTR's lucky owner. MSO has also commissioned a bespoke crash helmet for the owner which will complement the livery of the auto.
