Media coverage contrasts George HW Bush's era with Trump's

George HW Bush Remembered Locally

Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush will lie in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda starting Monday evening as Americans honor the life of the country's 41st president.

Before a visibly moved Bush family and with hands on hearts, members of Bush's Cabinet, lawmakers, the vice president and Supreme Court justices honoured the 41st president as his flag-draped casket entered the soaring Capitol Rotunda for the first official ceremony.

Congressional leaders announced Saturday that Bush would lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda from Monday, December 3 to Wednesday, December 5.

The 41st president died Friday, aged 94, at his home in Texas - "a very gentle and peaceful passing", his lifelong friend and advisor James Baker said Sunday on ABC's "This Week".

The former president had struggled for years with Parkinson's disease, which left him wheelchair-bound and repeatedly hospitalized - including after Barbara's death.

Soon after, he reached the height of his political popularity following the liberation of Kuwait, with public approval ratings that are the envy of today's politicians, the USA economy began to sour and voters began to believe that Bush, never a great communicator - something even he acknowledged - was out of touch with ordinary people.

"I think he was one of the kindest, most generous men", said Marge Frazier, who visited the downtown statue.

"A lovely day In Texas - 'ceiling and visibility unlimited, ' Mr. President", he wrote, in reference to the aviation code phrase for a desirable situation, one used by Bush's family and friends to spread the news of his death.

'George H.W. Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for, ' he continued. "He was just one of the smartest people I've ever been around, and so down to earth", said Woods, who played a number of rounds with Bush while in Houston and at the exclusive Lochinvar Golf Club, just a short distance from George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

After the funeral on Wednesday morning, Bush's casket will return to Joint Base Andrews at 1:15 p.m., and will then be transported back to Houston.

Bush is the last president to have served in World War II, and as a fighter pilot, his plane was shot down over the Pacific.
