Microsoft Releases Emergency Patch To Fix Day One IE Issue

InPrivate Desktop launches as Windows Sandbox

Tech giant Microsoft has issued a rare "emergency patch" to fix a vulnerability that allows criminals to exploit a hole in Internet Explorer. IE is, however, still maintained alongside the operating systems that it ran on, which means it'll keep getting security updates throughout the lifetime of Windows 7 and 8.

Fortunately, the hacker does not receive elevated rights by using this vulnerability, as long as the victim is logged in with his or her user account.

Those are the basics, but be sure to visit Microsoft's blog post about Windows Sandbox if you want to take a deeper dive into the technical details behind the feature and learn how it all works.

Head of commercial cybersecurity practice at consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton, Jason Escaravage, remarked that the issue is also significant because it comes as companies prepare for the weekend before Christmas. The page reads, "Rollout Status as of December 17, 2018: Windows 10, version 1809, is now fully available for advanced users who manually select "Check for updates" via Windows Update". If a script is used that corrupts the memory in a certain way, someone could execute foreign code on that machine.

Microsoft writes that it released the security update after Google informed the company of the exploit being used in targeted attacks.

AG Nominee Barr Sent Memo to Justice Dept. Critical of Mueller Probe
Rosenstein said DOJ is informed by the facts and "that memo has no impact on our investigation". CNN reported that Barr discussed the June memo with Trump before he was officially nominated.

You'll often see feature updates referred to by a four-digit number, such as 1809. But it looks like Microsoft has been working hard in the background in order to address this issue.

The flaw, known as CVE-2018-8653, affects Internet Explorer versions 9, 10 and 11. As booting Windows can be slow for each time you wish to use this feature, Windows Sandbox will create a snapshot of the virtual machine's state after its first boot.

Those numbers masked a more serious problem: In the preceding 12 months, IE lost one-fifth of its users, an unsustainable rate of decline.

Microsoft is launching a new app for Windows 10 Insiders simply called Office which lets you easily get back to your documents and also promotes Microsoft Office subscription features.
