Oakland Files Antitrust, Breach Of Contract Suit Against Raiders, NFL

As first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, the city of Oakland filed a lawsuit in federal court Tuesday, accusing the Raiders and National Football League of an illegal practice by moving the team to Las Vegas, and seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.

The Raiders' decision to move to Las Vegas, announced previous year, infuriated fans; in fact, two fan groups lobbied the city to sue.

The team does not know where it will play in 2019, though it had proposed a lease to remain in the Oakland Coliseum for one more season, prior to the lawsuit being filed.

The City Attorney recommended and the Oakland City Council authorized filing the lawsuit to recover damages resulting from the Raiders' illegal move to Las Vegas, including lost revenue, money that Oakland taxpayers invested in the Raiders and other costs.

"Man, that is insane", Raiders quarterback Derek Carr said Wednesday. Oakland is not asking the court to block the Raiders move, but the city is seeking the maximum amount of damages available.

Emery passion and intensity benefitting Arsenal immensely - Smith Rowe
They are apparently hoping that Unai Emery will prefer to sell in January when they might be able to get something in the way of a transfer fee for him, rather than lose him for nothing in the summer.

The Raiders moved back to Oakland in 1995 after leaving the city for Los Angeles, where they had a 13-year stint from 1982-1994.

"Further, each time an NFL club moves, all NFL teams share in a "relocation fee.' In the last several years, the NFL defendants have shared approximately $1.47 billion in these fees".

"The city says league officials negotiated in bad faith and did not give serious consideration to its counter-offer to build a new stadium using a mix of public and private funds".

Davis, however, told reporters at the National Football League team owners meeting in Irving, Texas that he hasn't ruled out playing in Oakland next year.

The lawsuit immediately raised questions about the Raiders' future in 2019.

"This suit is on behalf of all the people who are part of this great fan base in Oakland and the East Bay", Bobbitt said. "But for the fans, it's something that I've got to think about".
