US Border Patrol agents arrest 32 religious protesters in San Diego

Claims of fear to return home spike at US-Mexico border

Two groups of Central American migrants marched to the US Consulate in Tijuana on Tuesday demanding that they be processed through the asylum system more quickly and that the US must either grant entry or pay $50,000 to each of them in reparations.

When the man threw another rock across the border, agents alerted Tijuana Police to arrest him.

Pro-migrant activists demonstrate against U.S. migration policies near the U.S. -Mexico border fence at Imperial Beach in San Diego County, as seen from Playas de Tijuana, Baja California State, Mexico, on December 10.

U.S. immigration officials say these claims, most of which are accepted, exploit a legal loophole allowing migrants to enter the United States while they await a court hearing on their asylum case. "Multiple" members of the group said they were members of the migrant caravan heading north from Central America, officials said.

A photographer for The Associated Press saw about a dozen people being handcuffed Monday after they were told by agents to move back away from a wall. "We're calling on the respect the rights of migrants", said Joyce Ajlouny, general secretary of Quaker group the American Friends Service Committee, which organized the protest.

"This belief calls us to stand with those fleeing violence and poverty, and to call on our government to uphold the human rights of migrants and end the militarization of border communities".

The second letter, delivered around 1:20 p.m., came from a separate group of caravan members asking for the speed up the asylum process. They were a group of about 50 migrants with demands that included faster asylum processing and increased entry for asylums seekers.

The teen said he still had the girl with him at the border, but his group separated before crossing into the US and he lost track of the mother. A large number have chose to make new lives in Mexico, applying for work permits and taking jobs at local factories while they wait as the US government processes about 100 asylum requests a day at the San Ysidro crossing, the United States' busiest.

Protest leaders said President Donald Trump had portrayed the caravan as a security threat to advance his "anti-immigrant" agenda and further restrict migrants' ability to seek asylum.

'As the majority of these claims will not be successful when they are adjudicated by an immigration court, we need Congress to act to address these vulnerabilities, ' CBP Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said in a statement.
