WDOK (Star 102)/Cleveland Drops Christmas Song Due To Complaints

Christmas FM confirm they won't be playing 'Baby, It's Cold Outside' due to its controversial lyrics

Debate over the well-known tune "Baby It's Cold Outside" has been brewing for some years, but a radio station in OH has taken the unprecedented step of refusing to play the song ahead of the Christmas period, because it is "no longer appropriate".

"This song IS inappropriate, but I also understand it was written in the 40s".

The lyrics, which includes a key line that purportedly alludes to a drink being spiked, were deemed too controversial and the song was subsequently pulled.

The song is a conversation involving a man trying to persuade his female guest not to take the journey home in bad weather, but to have another drink and spend the night with him.

"The world we live in is extra sensitive now, and people get easily offended", Anderson said.

The song was written by Frank Loesser and his wife at the time, Lynn which they performed together at many parties.

Video shows passerby in Texas freaking out over Clark Griswold Christmas display
The family made a decision to put up a sign at the bottom of the ladder that reads: "Clark G is part of our Christmas display please do not call 911".

When the woman says "the answer is no" the man responds: "But baby, it's cold outside".

But concerned listeners have been calling out the song for several years over its apparent sinister message behind the songs lyrics. "The tune might be catchy, but let's maybe not promote that sort of an idea".

Comedian Jen Kirkman said it was not about coercive sex but a woman "who knows her reputation is ruined if she stays".

Sondra Miller, president of the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center, said that "in 2018, what we know is consent is "Yes" and if you get a "No" it means "No" and you should stop right there".

I'm so exhausted of this.

While it is certainly not the first year that the song's lyrics have been put under the microscope, it is the first year that radio stations around the world are opting to leave it off the airwaves - likely in the aftermath of the #MeToo movement.
