Apple's AirPlay and iTunes coming to smart TVs this year

Samsung smart TVs are getting iTunes and AirPlay 2 support

Samsung announced the partnership on Sunday, stating that a dedicated iTunes app - called iTunes Movies and TV Shows - will be available on its 2019 smart TV range around March or April of this year.

It's official: Samsung's 2019 smart TVs will provide inbuilt access to iTunes movies and TV shows as well as Apple AirPlay 2 support. With the latter bit, there will be a dedicated application on the smart TVs that will give access to the digital content from iTunes, similar to how Netflix works.

A new, dedicated app for iTunes holds all users' movies and TV shows purchased through Apple's service.

Apple is opening up its ecosystem to one of its biggest rivals by giving owners of Samsung TVs direct access to iTunes content. The deal also signals that "peak iPhone" is very real and that Apple is looking for ways in which it can supplement its revenue in the face of a declining iPhone market. Users in over 100 countries will see their TV's upgraded to allow AirPlay 2 functionality as well. AirPlay 2, meanwhile, will allow you to easily mirror the screen of your Mac or iOS device on a smart TV. It now looks likely that Apple will finally launch its streaming video service at its Worldwide Developer Conference in June, if not before.

Control Your TV with Siri: Perhaps the most interesting feature is the ability to use Siri on your iPhone to send video to your TV.

If you own a 2018 Smart TV, don't worry - support will be made available via firmware update.

Previously, iTunes video playback was limited to the iTunes app on Apple devices and Windows PCs, as well as the Apple TV set-top box. However, this is the first time that it will be possible with video services and TVs. This isn't just Apple admitting that its streaming service can't survive without those who refuse to pay for its increasingly pricey hardware.

With any luck, we'll be seeing a bunch of smart TVs with inbuilt iTunes apps in the near future.
