California man charged with stealing roommate's winning $10M lottery ticket

Man 'stole friend's

The man, who had mistakenly thought he had won $10,000 at first, "returned home and shared this wonderful news with his two roommates", according to investigators.

Adul Saosongyang certainly will not be remembered as a master criminal, but the Vacaville Police Department in California seemed to enjoy bringing him in when his amateurish plan to make off with a large sum of money (much larger than he realised) essentially saw him hand himself in to them.

CBS13 reached out to them for comment but have yet to hear back.

When he woke, the roommate took the card to a shop in an attempt to collect his winning but was told that it wasn't a victor. But when officials examined the ticket, they told him it was not a victor and that it had been altered to make it look like he'd won.

Lottery officials began the standard process of investigating the ticket, which includes filling out a victor claim form. That's also when Saosongyang learned the scratcher wasn't a $10,000 victor and instead was a $10 million victor.

According to police, Vacaville detectives and the California Lottery investigator learned one of the man's roommates went to the same Lucky store, purchased a similar ticket, altered it and swapped it with the winning ticket. Confused, the man suspected his winning ticket had been swapped for a dud by one of his roommates and reported the incident to the police.

Broncos to name Vic Fangio new coach; Kubiak returning to sideline
This is the first head coaching job for the 60-year-old, but he has more than 30 years of coaching experience in the NFL. Fangio will succeed Vance Joseph, who Broncos GM John Elway fired at the conclusion of a disappointing 6-10 season.

That's the number of dollars he won with a lottery ticket he purchased December 20, a ticket his roommate allegedly stole.

The California Lottery confirmed in a statement that the theft of the $10 million prize money was thwarted and reminded players to take precautions when playing the lotto.

The Vacaville Police Department arrested Adul Saosongyang, 35, on grand theft charges for allegedly stealing a Scratcher lottery ticket his roommate bought for $30. In fact, the ticket had been altered.

The post continues: "He was booked into Sacramento County Jail and will be transferred to the Solano County Jail later this week".

Meanwhile, Polen, the police spokesman, said lottery officials were discussing the winnings with the victim.
