Destiny exclusively in Bungie’s hands after split with Activision

Activision and Bungie announce end of their partnership

Bungie and Activision are parting ways after entering a publishing agreement in 2010, with Bungie maintaining publishing rights to the Destiny franchise. There is now no word on whether Destiny will remain on the Blizzard's Battle.net launcher, an integration that happened in October of 2017.

Bungie has been a major force in the video game industry ever since they launched the iconic Halo franchise in 2001. Bungie favors gameplay catered to the core base while Activision is unhappy with sales and wants to cast a wider net. Moving forward, Bungie will take care of publishing Destiny on its own without Activision's help. Bungie clearly see this as a win, and now they'll have way more freedom as to how they develop their games, and what kind of business model they can adopt. Bungie also said they are looking forward to "surprising our community with some exciting announcements about what lies beyond", potentially referencing a sequel or expansion to Destiny 2 Forsaken. It would also like to assure players that it will deliver on the current Destiny road map, so there's no need to worry about this breaking up the flow of your game.

Activision has reportedly been at odds with Bungie for some time - the entire eight-year span of their partnership, according to some correspondents. In a blog post published today - appropriately titled "Our Destiny" - Bungie announced "plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie", which will give the studio full ownership and control of the IP.

Winter weather advisory issued: Freezing rain possible for York, Lancaster, Chester
Areas around Effingham have already seen significant snowfall amounts, like the measurement below near Beecher City of 7.5 inches. There is a slight chance for a few flurries on Monday, otherwise a dry week with milder weather returning on Tuesday.

Within the coming months, Bungie will be announcing additional information that it hopes will surprise players about what the future holds for the Destiny franchise. After two games and multiple expansions, they've realized that is not the publisher they needed. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects. Our success is owed in no small part to the incredible community of players who have graced our worlds with light and life.

It's obviously too early to tell exactly what kind of impact this will have on Destiny, and indeed, on Bungie itself.
