First footage: ‘Game of Thrones’ finale hints at major alliances

Irons Watchmen

During the 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards, HBO dropped a new trailer for its 2019 slate which featured our first look at the fantasy drama's eighth and final season.

Also in the scene are Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Brienne of Tarth (Gwendoline Christie) and Ser Jorah Mormont (Iain Glen).

In the brief footage, Daenerys is seen being introduced to Sansa, who now holds the fort at Winterfell, by Jon after their arrival from Dragonstone. She is greeted by Sansa Stark at the gates who tells her, "Winterfell is yours, your grace", albeit a bit grudgingly.

The nefarious undead villain The Night King managed to both kill and resurrect Daenerys' dragon Viserion, which he used to destroy The Wall at Eastwatch in the final moments of Season 7. The eight season was two years in the making and will feature six episode of nearly 1.5 hours run time each.

Al Qaida man suspected of USS Cole attack killed in USA airstrike
Damage sustained on the USS Cole after a terrorist bomb exploded during a refuelling operation in the port of Aden, Yemen. Another key suspect in the Cole attack, Abdel Rahim Al Nashiri remains incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay.

Interestingly, the scant footage of the new adaptation of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' graphic novel bears little resemblance to the influential source material.

Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Zoe Kravitz, Laura Dern and Shailene Woodley in a still from Big Little Lies. It's the first time the characters have met on the HBO hit.

Footage from Mahershala Ali's starrer "True Detective" season three and Julia Louis-Dreyfus' political satire "Veep" also features in the teaser.
