Ginsburg to miss next week's Supreme Court sessions, but recovery 'on track'

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Misses 3 Days On The Bench, But This Isn't A Big Deal

Ginsburg's recovery is "on track", according to the Supreme Court.

Ginsburg announced in December that she had surgery to remove two cancerous growths from her lungs.

Ginsburg, 85, who missed oral arguments this week, has not been on the bench since her surgery last month, but she has participated by reading briefs at home.

Still recovering from her recent lung surgery at home, Justice Ginsburg was unable to attend oral arguments this week for the first time in her career on the Supreme Court. A Politico report, citing an unnamed source, states that White House officials are "taking the temperature on possible short-list candidates" to replace Ginsburg and discussing with "key stakeholders" about the nomination process. She also has broken ribs on at least two occasions.

Cancer surgeons have said, though, that several weeks of recovery is perfectly normal for the procedure.

US military removes some equipment from Syria; Russia sckeptical
Turkey considers America's Kurdish allies of the YPG militia - who were vital in the ground war against ISIS - a terrorist group. Both had declared that the U.S. would not leave unless ISIS was entirely defeated and Turkey agreed not to attack Syrian Kurds.

If Ginsburg, who will turn 86 in March, is unable to return to the bench, President Donald Trump would have the chance to nominate a third Supreme Court justice to the highest USA court. "Post-surgery evaluation indicates no evidence of remaining disease, and no further treatment is required", the Court released Friday afternoon.

"They're doing it very quietly, of course, because the idea is not to be opportunistic, but just to be prepared so we aren't caught flat-footed", one anonymous source told Politico.

Ginsburg's health troubles have been met by significant concern from liberals, who recognize that if she retires and Trump picks a conservative to replace her, it would mark a significant generational shift to the right for the court.

The short list of potential replacements for the ailing Ginsburg include Seventh Circuit judge Amy Coney Barrett, whose name got floated before Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh.

With Gorsuch, protestations over the denial of Obama nominee Merrick Garland forced Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to implement the nuclear option-a simple 50-vote majority rather than a 60-vote, filibuster-proof super-majority. Prior to this week, she had never missed a day of work in her more than 25 years as a Supreme Court justice.
