Indian MPs pass contentious citizenship Bill that excludes Muslims

Protesters against the bill have accused settlers of taking away jobs from indigenous groups

With the citizenship bill slated to come up in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the last day of the winter session, opposition parties are planning on "dramatic" protests in Parliament, against the bill being introduced or passed as the numbers are stacked in favour of the treasury benches in the Lower House.

"We had pointed out to Sonowal that people had accorded him the title of "Jatiya Nayak" (leader of the community) after the Supreme Court scrapped the Illegal Migrants' Determination by Tribunal (IMDT) Act following his petition and it was his duty to respect people's sentiments on the issue", he said.

It would grant rights to Hindus, Jains, Parsi and several other non-Muslim religious groups who migrated illegally from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The AGP's move to snap ties with the BJP, just a few months before general elections, will have little impact on chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal's government, but it adds to the perception about the saffron party's inability to keep its allies.

It referred to the understanding arrived at prior to the Assam Assembly election, 2016, and said the AGP had chose to go for the alliance during a discussion with the BJP in New Delhi on "the basis of clear understanding of the Assam Accord, other major issues of Assam, including the seat adjustments".

"Our leaders met Home Minister (Rajnath Singh) and expressed that AGP is going to break the alliance", AGP spokesperson Dilip Patgiri told ANI.

Samujjal Bhattacharyya from NESO said people in the region would not "accept the political injustice perpetrated by the BJP".

"The BJP had a pre-poll alliance with us before the 2016 Assembly polls".

The BJP has 61 MLAs and support from 12 MLAs of the Bodoland People's Front and the sole Independent member.

The Parishad members will meet on Wednesday and decide on the specific course of action if the Bill is passed.

Around 250 supporters of INPT and TSF gathered at Jirania in West Tripura, block roads to protest Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 today morning.

The bill sparked a second day of protests in the northeastern state of Assam, where almost 4 million people, accused of being foreigners, were effectivelystripped of their citizenship past year.

Asked if the National People's Party will put out of the BJP-led NDA government, the NPP Chief said: "We have been very clear to the NDA that this is something we will not support".

While addressing a protest meeting against the Citizenship Bill in Guwahati on Monday, Mr Mahanta stated that his party was all set to walk out of the alliance with the BJP. Earlier on January 7, a section of protestors belonging to the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, an influential peasants' body, and other organisations staged a nude demonstration in New Delhi as the Bill was being tabled in Parliament.

Nagaland Tribes Council (NTC) are also opposing the Bill.

The bill seeks to give citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Christians and Parsis from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, who came to India before December 31, 2014.

Saying that the bill was against the principle of secularism, the CM told mediapersons, "If passed, the bill would be harmful to states like Mizoram where there is a large number of illegal Buddhist migrants from Bangladesh". They contend that the bill also contradicts the 1985 Assam Accord, which states that illegal immigrants coming from Bangladesh after 25 March 1971 would be deported.
