London's Heathrow halts flights after sightings of a drone

Drones have GPS systems fitted which stop them from functioning when they exceed height restrictions

"As a precautionary measure, we have stopped departures while we investigate", said Heathrow Airport in a tweet.

Labour MP John Spellar challenged Transport Secretary Chris Grayling after Gatwick airport was repeatedly forced to close between December 19 and 21 due to reported drone sightings, causing chaos for hundreds of thousands of passengers.

A spokesperson from the airport confirmed that a drone was sighted near or within the airport, prompting the precautionary suspension of departure flights.

Other proposals detail how flights could alternate from the three future runways to best manage noise and offer periods of respite.

Airport bosses have been criticised for not learning from the mistakes of last month and not investing in drone protection technology.

Heathrow's executive director for expansion Emma Gilthorpe said: "Heathrow's aim is to design a sustainable, fair and more efficient future airport while connecting the United Kingdom to global growth".

Another wrote; "Grounded at #Heathrow whilst waiting to fly home to Manchester, first officer says flights suspended whilst police investigate possible #drone activity". It is now unclear whether the anti-drone equipment owned by the airport was deployed.

But the final proved a step too far, even after a stunning first set, as Goerges rallied to kick off 2019 with a 2-6 7-5 6-1 win. After holding serve in the first game, she set the tone for the first set by immediately breaking Goerges for a 2-0 lead.

"I could tell it was a drone - these things have got quite distinctive lights - not a helicopter".

On Tuesday, the Government announced a package of measures created to give police extra powers to combat drones.

Flights from the London airport, the second busiest in the world, resumed about an hour after police said a drone had been seen.

York said he is "absolutely certain that there was a drone flying throughout the period that the airport was closed".

The drone operator wasn't caught.

Police could also fine drone users failing to comply with authorities or present registration to operate a drone up to £100.
