A loud explosion has been reported in central Paris, police have said, with pictures showing severe damage to a building.

Firefighters are tackling a blaze in Paris following a powerful explosion.

Scenes around the bakery, shown in images uploaded on Twitter show firefighters at the scene of the blast, while French television showed emergency vehicles surrounding the area.

The cause of the explosion is not known yet.

The situation was "under control" by the time French Interior Minister Interior Christophe Castaner visited the scene, which he described as shocking.

The cause of the blast appeared to be an accidental gas leak, said Paris prosecutor Remy Heitz. Silver-helmeted firefighters and red firetrucks filled the street and inspected adjoining courtyards.

The explosion took place on the Rue de Trevise, causing fire and chaos on the adjacent streets, local witnesses and journalists report.

The bakery is around the corner from the Folies-Bergere theater and not far from the shopping district that includes the famed headquarters of Galeries Lafayette.
