"The beginning of a year ago started so well, so I'm hopeful that it can happen again", Federer said. "It was somewhat of a wake-up call for me when he passed away, I really started to train hard", he said. "If I can say thank you for my technique today it's to Peter", he said.

'Geez, never broke down like this'.

"The amusing thing is we have four different formats in four Slams, so it is important to remind yourself what's going on and which one it is", said Federer.

Like Federer, Djokovic has seen enormous success at the Australian Open throughout his career.

Federer "left his hotel and ran through the streets, bawling and hysterical", the Australian newspaper reported. "I was able to have coaching lessons with him, and he was from Adelaide in Australia".

"I've been incredibly fortunate to have the people at the right time, the right coaches at the right time".

Even though Federer has spent only two weeks at home since August, the 37-year-old said being on tour now in the "back end", of his career was his most enjoyable period.

Federer regularly pays for Carter's parents to watch his matches at the Australian Open, flying them from Adelaide to Melbourne. "I made those decisions, but I've been lucky along the way".

As Australian Open champion Roger Federer prepares to defend his title again at Melbourne Park, he is full of emotion.

"Am I confident? I don't know".

"There's so much that connects me to that country".

They used to call each other and say "I have this really special kid I'm training", he said.

Already eliminated in singles, Stauffer noted that Federer wore a black armband when he played and lost in the doubles in Toronto alongside Wayne Ferreira - a South African - against Australian duo Joshua Eagle and Sandon Stolle. I have a huge passion for Roger Federer, a great respect for Rafael Nadal and I am interested in the newcomers.
