Theresa May suffers major Commons defeat as MPs begin Brexit debate

Theresa May tells MPs 'see you next Tuesday' as Brexit vote confirmed

Britain's main opposition Labour Party will demand a general election if Prime Minister Theresa May loses a vote in Parliament over her Brexit plans next week, its leader Jeremy Corbyn will say on Thursday (Jan 10).

"The only way to avoid "no deal" is to vote for the deal", May told lawmakers in the House of Commons on the first of five days of debate ahead of a vote on Tuesday. May's Brexit deal, however, virtually assuring it will be defeated.

Theresa May suffered yet another defeat over Brexit on Wednesday after a furious row erupted between Tory MPs and Commons Speaker John Bercow.

The Independent says that MPs are planning a push for a second referendum.

It was drawn up by the Conservative former attorney general Dominic Grieve and forces a deadline on May if the deal is voted down as is predicted next Tuesday. The opposition Labour Party said it will call for a vote of no confidence in the government if May loses on January 15.

Late Tuesday, legislators backed an amendment to the Finance Bill that puts roadblocks in the way of government spending on no-deal Brexit measures.

"This is a time for parliament to come together and work intensively to establish an agreement that can command majority support".

Environment Secretary Michael Gove told Cabinet that those considering rejecting Mrs May's agreement in the hope of securing a better deal were like swingers in their mid-50s waiting for film star Scarlett Johansson to turn up on a date.

Meanwhile, Mrs May is no closer to reaching an agreement on the "backstop" insurance mechanism aimed at keeping the Irish border open if a Brexit deal is not reached.

With less than three months until Britain leaves the EU, May is struggling to win approval for her Brexit deal.

May insisted Wednesday that "further clarification" from the European Union was possible, "and those talks will continue over the next few days".

As for a snap election, if Corbyn and his Labour party fails to oust May's Tory party, it'll only serve to reinforce May's position in Brexit negotiations and that means in all likelihood the United Kingdom could be heading towards some form of deal with the European Union after a series of delays.

But the amendment will force the PM on to the rebels' timetable, and bring her deal back in front of MPs for a second time after just three days - barely any time to get extra concessions from Brussels. This would force parliamentarians to choose between the backstop - i.e. their main objection to the deal - and paying more to the European Union without representation, which is bound to be offensive to their constituents.

In the Commons, Tory anger was directed at the Speaker, who many MPs have long suspected is unduly sympathetic to the Remain cause.

The vote came hard on the heels of Tuesday night's Commons defeat for the Government on a motion meant to limit its powers to change taxes in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

Before the vote, May's government said a defeat would be "inconvenient rather than significant", noting that there were other mechanisms that would allow the government to raise money.

"The only way we can move forward if the Government's deal is not acceptable to Parliament is for Parliament to engage with Government and find a solution, which is what I am trying to do". "Our colleagues in Britain's lower house carry great responsibility now - the agreement is on the table".

Weber said a no-deal withdrawal would "lead to very hard, perhaps even chaotic situations".

Speaking to MPs earlier, May said: "The only way to avoid no deal is to vote for the deal".

A potentially damaging no-deal exit is the default scenario if May's deal is rejected, with the UK's central bank warning that Britain's gross domestic product (GDP) could shrink by up to eight percent in such a scenario.
