Uber driver pleads guilty to killing 6 in US shooting spree

Jason Dalton pleaded guilty to killing six people in-between picking up riders for Uber in February 2016

The New York Post reports that a MI man charged with killing six strangers in between picking up Uber fares pleaded guilty on Monday.

Jason Dalton talks with his defense attorney Eusebio Solis moments before pleading guilty to six counts of murder and other charges on Monday, in Kalamazoo, Mich.

His charges consist of six counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder and eight charges relating to firearms offences.

Police said Dalton committed the shootings between picking up fares as an Uber driver in the southwestern MI city on February 20, 2016.

In March 2016, Dalton filed a $US10 million ($NZ14.8 million) federal civil rights lawsuit against the ride-sharing company after telling investigators that Uber's app had the ability to "take over" his body and compel him to kill.

There was no sentencing agreements that hinged on Dalton's guilty pleas. His victims include four women, a man, and a 17-year-old boy. Dalton pleaded guilty to murder and attempted murder over his attorney's objections, triggering a mandatory sentence of life in prison with no chance for parole on February 5.

Dalton's motives remain a mystery.

He later opened fire outside of a local Cracker Barrel, taking the lives of 74-year-old Dorothy Brown, 63-year-old Mary Lou Nye, 60-year-old Mary Jo Nye, and 68-year-old Barbara Hawthorne, authorities said.

Tiana Carruthers, who was shot multiple times but survived the attack, told the court that she saw Dalton's face "every time" she goes to sleep, adding: "I hurt every single day".

"He either shook his head or said no, and I said, 'Are you sure?' " Derek continued.

Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting said he and his team were happy to reach a resolution in the case. Dalton was deemed competent to stand trial and he recently dropped an insanity plea, according to the Associated Press. He also described something "like an artificial presence", the report said.

Dalton will be formally sentenced on February 5th.

Dalton is a father of two, and a former insurance adjuster and Uber driver.

The 48-year-old told the judge Monday he wanted to plead guilty, avoiding a weekslong trial.
