United States job creation vaults higher in 2018

Nancy Pelosi Hoyer Perez

The strength in job growth in December did not translate to the transportation and logistics sector, however, which was weighed down by job losses among parcel companies.

The U.S. Labor Market saw an increase in employment in December, closing the year with the addition of 312,000 total nonfarm payroll jobs, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' monthly jobs report. The unemployment rate rose to 3.9 percent, but that's because more people came off the sidelines to look for jobs, the Labor Department said Friday.

Average hourly pay improved 3.2 percent from a year ago, up from 2.7 percent at the end of 2017. The labor force participation rate, which measures the share of the civilian non-institutional population who are in the labor force (either employed or looking for work), rose by 0.2 p.p. over the month to 63.1 percent in December.

The latest jobs report is (mostly) good news for workers.

Slow income growth has been the most persistent problem afflicting the U.S. economy in its recovery from the Great Recession.Wages have barely kept up with the cost of living, even as the unemployment rate dropped and the economy expanded.

"Friday's payrolls numbers suggest a healthier U.S. economy than some investors had anticipated", it said.

Klopp gives Liverpool title edge over Guardiola's City - Van Gaal
Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness highlighted these set of results recently and stated they are what makes his job so hard . There is one player potentially on the market which has the ideal profile for Liverpool and that is Timo Werner .

The health care, food services, construction and manufacturing sectors were the primary contributors to last month's hiring.

"While an encouraging indicator of our resilient economy, the final jobs report of 2018 comes as the economy shows unsure signs of its direction", House Majority Leader Steny H Hoyer said, adding that the Trump administration's economic policies are "taking a toll on small businesses, farmers, and working families". Hiring and wage gains will support consumer spending and offer some respite after a spate of weak economic data and cuts in corporate revenue forecasts fueled stock-market jitters.

Depending on how long it lasts, the shutdown "could be a big negative" in next month's jobsreport, which will reflect January employment, Kevin Hassett, a top economic adviser to President Trump, said Thursday. In September, Pelosi trashed a jobs report that analysts called the "greatest of all time", warning of "stagnant real wage growth for workers". Restaurants and bars added 41,000 jobs.

The average monthly increase in US construction jobs in 2018 was +23,000, which was +12.0% higher than 2017's average monthly increase of +21,000. Wage growth also performed well in December, rising 0.4% as year-over-year growth climbed to 3.2%. It had been at a 50-year low of 3.7% for two of the last three months. The comparable increases across the whole economy, both hourly and weekly, were +3.2%.

The large month-to-month gain in jobs in December understates the overall improvement, since there was also a substantial positive revision to prior data. Job growth averaged 220,000 per month in 2018. On the goods side of the economy, both manufacturing and construction saw solid gains in employment in December, with each adding over 30,000 workers to payrolls.

And businesses are still searching for more workers. The health and education sector added 82,000 positions.
