US pushes China to keep promises as trade-deal hopes rise

U.S. China leave next steps for trade talks unclear

The talks that started Monday were the first face-to-face meetings since Trump and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, agreed December 1 to suspend further action against each other's imports for 90 days while they negotiate over US complaints that Beijing steals or pressures companies to hand over technology.

World markets rose on increasing optimism that the two sides would be able to hammer out a deal ahead of a March deadline and avert further import tariff hikes.

US officials are meeting with their counterparts in Beijing this week for the first face-to-face talks since Trump and China's President Xi Jinping in December agreed to a 90-day truce in a trade war that has roiled global markets.

They agreed to maintain close contact, the statement said.

A statement from the Chinese government was expected as soon as Wednesday.

USA officials also conveyed Trump's commitment to address his country's trade deficit with China and to resolve structural issues to improve trade between both countries, according to the USTR.

President Trump took to Twitter Tuesday to give his take on current negotiations, declaring talks with China are going very well.

This meeting was previously unscheduled, signaling the two sides could be coming together on key issues.

China is keen to put an end to its trade dispute with the United States but will not make any "unreasonable concessions" and any agreement must involve compromise on both sides, state newspaper the China Daily said on Wednesday. Trump has complained repeatedly about the USA trade deficit with China, which past year likely exceeded the 2017 gap of $336 billion. USA government data shows the Asian nation scooped up more than 2.6 million metric tons of beans in December and at least another 1.3 million were sold this year, according to people familiar with the matter.

Stock markets were roiled last week after Apple (APPL) warned it will badly miss its quarterly sales forecast because of weaker growth in China amid the trade war.

Suspicious packages sent to several diplomatic missions in Australia
Australian Federal Police are now examining the packages, which were delivered to consulates on St Kilda Rd and in the CBD. Sky reported that the scare coincided with the United States embassy's hazmat training, which had been booked for months.

Among their many requests, US negotiators are asking the Chinese to increase purchases of American farm and energy commodities; allow greater access into China's markets; improve and enforce property theft protections; and an end of China's policy of forcing foreign companies to hand over technology secrets.

"If the results of the talks are positive, it would be beneficial for both China and the U.S. and also a good news for the global economy", he added.

The talks went ahead despite tensions over the arrest of a Chinese tech executive in Canada on USA charges related to possible violations of trade sanctions against Iran.

Speaking after the conclusion of the talks, Ted McKinney, the USA under secretary for trade and foreign agricultural affairs, told reporters in Beijing that he thought they "went just fine".

USTR also said the two sides discussed issues related to intellectual property protections and the need for any agreement to include "complete implementation subject to ongoing verification and effective enforcement".

The Communist country has been hit with an economic slowdown and its auto sales have dropped 19 percent last month from the year before, the steepest decline in China in almost three decades.

Oil also caught investors' attention after U.S. crude and Brent jumped overnight, helped by optimism over easing Sino-U.S. trade tensions, while OPEC-led crude output cuts also provided support.

"I don't speak for them obviously", Cook told CNBC in reference to the Trump administration.

For its part, Beijing is unhappy with US export and investment curbs, such as controls on "dual use" technology with possible military applications. It included agriculture, energy, commerce, treasury and State Department officials.
