US says airstrike targeted militant tied to USS Cole bombing

USA forces conducted a precision airstrike targeting al-Badawi on January 1 in the Marib governorate, said Capt. Bill Urban, a Central Command spokesperson.

Al-Badawi has been picked up by Yemeni authorities multiple times since the bombing; however, he has repeatedly managed to escape justice.

Badawi was killed in the strike, according to USA and Arab media reports.

USA officials believe a drone strike killed one of the terrorists behind the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole in Yemen.

"US forces are still assessing the results of the strike following a deliberate process to confirm his death".

The airstrike precisely targeted a vehicle carrying Badawi who was travelling alone near al-Qaida-held area in al-Bayda, the source said.

It wasn't revealed whether the operation was carried out by the CIA or by USA military forces, only that the airstrike was the result of a joint U.S. military and intelligence operation, a United States administration official told CNN.

December Jobs Report: 312,000 Jobs Added, Unemployment Slightly Rises
Employers increased hours for workers, pushing the average workweek up to 34.5 hours from 34.4 hours in November. The markets have been turbulent amid concerns that the USA economy will be hurt by weakness in other countries.

Al-Badawi was charged with 50 counts of terrorism-related offenses, including murder of US nationals and murder of USA military personnel.

The bombing of the Cole killed 17 American sailors and wounded 39 others on October 12, 2000.

Two Yemeni suicide bombers rammed the ship in a small boat packed with up to 225kg (500lb) of high explosives, leaving a gaping hole in the side of the warship.

The Associated Press reported that Badawi was then sentenced to death for his role in the USS Cole attack, only to have his sentence reduced to 15 years in prison.

He was convicted of plotting and taking part in the bombing in Yemen in 2004 but escaped from prison and, after handing himself in again, was allowed to walk free.

A US airstrike in Yemen has targeted one of the alleged masterminds of the USS Cole bombing, which killed 17 sailors in 2000.
