White House blasts report saying Federal Bureau of Investigation probed whether Trump worked for Russian Federation

President Richard Nixon bids farewell to the White House staff in 1974

The Times reports that it's unclear if the Mueller team is still on the counterintelligence angle, and that former law enforcement officials believe that the agents who opened it may have overstepped their bounds.

As CNN first reported, the Federal Bureau of Investigation opened the Trump probe, in the hectic days after the President fired Comey, after considering various options for dealing with the firing.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders issued a strongly worded response to the report on Friday night - though the statement didn't exactly deny the report itself.

The FBI opened an investigation into whether President Donald Trump was working on behalf of Russian Federation just after the Republican fired James Comey as FBI director, according to The New York Times.

"The investigation the F.B.I. opened into Mr. Trump also had a criminal aspect, which has always been publicly known: whether his firing of Mr. Comey constituted obstruction of justice".

Special Counsel Robert Mueller subsequently took over the investigation into Russian interference.

He is also relaxed about his form heading into the first Grand Slam of the season next week. The crowd-pleasing tune-up for the Australian Open was marked by good-natured competition.

In a phone interview Giuliani, who is a member of Trump's legal team, told the news outlet that the team should be able to check the conclusions of the report, which is now in its 20th month.

Giuliani went farther than any of Trump's legal advisers in demanding the right to review the report into claims of collusion with Russian Federation during the 2016 election, The Hill reported.

They were also motivated by his reported statements during a May White House meeting with visiting Russian officials that he had fired Comey because "he was insane, a real nut job". The smart bet would be that the phrase "witch hunt" and the caps-lock button would be involved. Trump also plays a central role in a separate case in NY, where prosecutors have implicated him in a crime.

It previously reported Mueller and the FBI are investigating Trump for possible obstruction of justice over Comey's firing, but the counterintelligence investigation into Trump had not been disclosed until the Times scoop. Manafort allegedly lied to the Mueller investigation about all these actions.

It's not clear whether the report will ever be released publicly.

The newspaper said it's not clear whether Mueller is still looking into that matter.
