WSJ report accusing Beijing over 1MDB bailout groundless: Chinese Embassy in Malaysia

China offered to help kill investigations into 1MDB: report

Chinese officials told visiting Malaysians that China would use its influence to try and get the USA and other countries to drop probes of allegations that allies of then-Prime Minister Najib Razak and others plundered the fund, according to the newspaper.

Moreover, Chinese officials also said that they would put recording devices into the offices and homes of WSJ reporters in Hong Kong who were looking into the 1MDB scandal, in order to ascertain the identities of their sources of information.

The Chinese Embassy in Malaysia yesterday said both China and Malaysia had all along treated each other as "friendly neighbours and honest partners".

The WSJ report alleged that the Najib administration had worked with Beijing on Belt and Road Initiative projects such as the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL), in order to divert funds to 1MDB.

Huge sums of public money were purportedly stolen from state fund 1MDB and used to buy everything from yachts to artwork in a scheme that allegedly involved former premier Najib Razak and contributed to his government's shock election defeat in May.

Slamming the report, Low said it was journalistic responsibility of the WSJ to have approached such claims with scepticism and suspicion, and that it was unfortunate that these baseless political accusations were passed off as legitimate reporting.

"China has all along adhered to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of any other country".

India want wins to preserve Test cricket
We've been working really hard to win a series overseas. "Best wishes for the various games ahead", he added. The southpaw would be raring to go after being left out of the Test squad against Australia.

"With the likelihood that the respondent will abscond, I'm of the considered view that the respondent's presence (in court) can not be secured by the setting of bail or the setting of any condition to the granting of bail", he said. "If this is said, this is something we will pursue".

Since coming to power in May, Mahathir's government has accused the Najib administration of inflating the cost of Chinese deals.

A Malaysian court yesterday declined to grant bail to former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng, pending his extradition to the U.S. where he faces charges related to suspected money laundering of funds siphoned off from state fund 1MDB.

The Malaysian government will scrutinise bilateral deals made with China under the previous government, finance minister Lim Guan Eng said on Tuesday (Jan 8). It couldn't be determined whether China provided any such information, the newspaper added.

Najib has since been charged with corruption over 1MDB.

The US State Department alleges that US$4.5 billion was looted from the fund by Najib and his cronies, and spent on everything from artwork to high-end real estate.

An ex-Goldman Sachs banker facing charges in the U.S. and Malaysia over a massive financial scandal Monday had his bid to be freed on bail rejected by a Kuala Lumpur court.
